In Genesis 5:1-2, we read these words: “This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created” (NIV). In this passage, we see three clear statements: 1. God created us in His image. 2. God created two sexes: male and female. 3. God blessed this “mankind” when they were created. But what if you were fined for presenting these truths?

In Canada, former school board trustee Barry Neufeld, an outspoken Christian, is facing just that: nearly $1 million in fines for stating his stance on social media. In February, Neufeld was ordered by the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal to pay $750,000. His crime? Discriminating against LGBT-identified teachers and staff members in the Chilliwack School District.

According to the tribunal, the fines would be used to compensate LGBT-identified employees who have “sustained injury to their dignity, feelings, and self-respect” as a result of Neufeld’s commentary. While Neufeld is currently appealing the ruling, he’s also been ordered to pay $442 to an unnamed “teacher C” to compensate their lost wages for attending a hearing.

What started in October 2017, when Neufeld posted on his personal FB page that the district’s SOGI program was rooted in a social construct and not biology, has now become a legal battle.

“At the risk of being labelled a bigoted homophobe, I have to say that I support traditional family values and I agree with the [American] College of Pediatricians that allowing little children choose to change gender is nothing short of child abuse,” he wrote. “But now the [British Columbia] Ministry of Education has embraced the LGBTQ lobby and is forcing this biologically absurd theory on children in our schools. Children are being taught that heterosexual marriage is no longer the norm. Teachers must not refer to ‘boys and girls, ’ they are merely students,” Neufeld told CBN.

While the battle continues, Neufeld explains that his social posts meant no harm; he was simply standing for Genesis 1:27: “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (NLT).
