5 Inspiring Bible Verses and Prayers for the Single Christian

Christian singles often experience a range of emotions, ranging from extreme loneliness to a strong sense of independence. If you are a single Christian, you may have felt sorrow, isolation, or embarrassment due to your relationship status. This can be unavoidable at times, especially if we have family members who constantly bring up the fact that we are not in a relationship. These comments can be annoying, but they can also bring distress into our hearts.

Will anyone ever love me?

Why am I not good enough?

What's wrong with me?

Will I ever measure up?

These thoughts can completely derail us at times, but we must stay the course. In God’s eyes, we are enough. We are not lacking anything (Colossians 2:9-10). The Bible contains many inspiring truths to help us navigate negative feelings about singleness.

Singleness is not a bad thing. Paul describes it as a gift (1 Corinthians 7). Do you feel like singleness is a gift? Allow God to change your perspective as you study the Bible passages below. There will also be prayer prompts to bring your heart back to the Lord. Let's look at a few of these truths today.

1. God Loves You (Romans 5:8)

1. God Loves You (Romans 5:8)

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Singleness often makes us feel unlovable or unworthy. When these feelings rise in our hearts, we must combat them with Scripture. Why are we thinking in this manner? Perhaps someone once told us we were inferior because we weren't in a relationship.

Even well-meaning individuals can say hurtful things to singles. When these comments come your way, brush them off. Avoid giving them any time or attention. Center your heart on Jesus and what He says about you.

God’s love for you has no bounds (Romans 8:37-39). Despite what others have said, rest in the promise that you are loved. Study the Bible, go to Him in prayer, and find strength in His comfort. His love can help you know that you are enough just as you are.

Dear God, thank You for loving me. Regrettably, I have believed the lie that I'm unlovable since I'm single. I reason I'm not pretty, smart, or good enough for a partner. Thank You for helping me to know that You love me. I am blessed beyond means with Your love. Amen.

2. You Are God’s Creative Work (Ephesians 2:10)

2. You Are God’s Creative Work (Ephesians 2:10)

“For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” (Ephesians 2:10, New English Translation)

It is essential to know that you are part of God’s wonderful creation, just as you are. You do not have to change to be someone else. The right person will love you for who you are. Within Ephesians 2:10, we are described as God’s creative work. All of God’s creativity is shown in you—His beauty, uniqueness, and amazing artistic abilities.

God has wonderful plans just for you. These good works were already planned for you long ago. Whether you stay single or get married later, know that you are fully capable of doing what God has called you to do. You can do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13).

Dear God, I am Your creative work. How amazing is this! I praise You for Your creativity, God. I'm glad You made me just as I am. I don't have to change to be someone else. The right person will love me for me. Thank You for showing me my true beauty, God. Just because I'm single doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with me. In Your Son’s Name, I pray, Amen.

3. You Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139:14)

3. You Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139:14)

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

Psalm 139:14 is often overused, yet it is important for us to reflect on. As single Christians, there will be times when we feel inadequate or like we are missing something. During these times, we must remember that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. God did not make a mistake when He created us. Rather, we are adequate and complete.

When waves of insecurities crash against your heart, bring them to the Lord. He will bring your heart back to this passage. With time and careful study of the Word, you will echo the words of the psalmist. You will accept your worth and value in God’s eyes.

This may take some time but find solace in God’s love for you. Whenever you start struggling with the thought that you are not enough, lean into the Bible. Keep a few Bible passages on your phone that remind you of your worth in God’s eyes. This can change not only your perspective, but also your entire life.

Dear Jesus, thank You for creating me fearfully and wonderfully. Being single, I often feel like I'm not enough. Thank You for helping me to know that I am amazing just as I am. My relationship status does not reflect my worth. My worth is found in You, Amen.

4. Every Good Gift Is from God (James 1:17)

4. Every Good Gift Is from God (James 1:17)

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17)

Some Christian singles will stay single for the rest of their lives, but there are also many singles who will marry. If God wants you to be married, rest in the assurance that it will happen. It is also important to pray scary prayers, such as “Lord, do You genuinely want me to be married? If not, please make it clear to me.”

Praying these types of prayers can be challenging, but they will give you the answers you need. If you do get to the stage of dating someone, make sure you are praying over the relationship. Ask the Lord to help you know if this is the right person for you. God will remove them from your life if they are not the person He wants for you.

Trust God’s judgment over your own. You might be surprised at the workings of God in your life. Give God time, pray to Him, and keep bringing your requests to Him. Whether you stay single or get married, they are gifts. Every good gift comes from God. Give Him praise for your singleness!

Dear God, my singleness is a gift. It is not a curse. For too long, I have seen singleness as something to be avoided at all costs, but I'm embracing it today. Whether I get married or stay single, I am blessed. You have blessed me beyond measure in Your love, God. I have You, which means I have everything that I need. Amen.

5. God Has Great Plans for Your Future (Even if You Don't Feel Like it Right Now) (1 Corinthians 2:9)

5. God Has Great Plans for Your Future (Even if You Don't Feel Like it Right Now) (1 Corinthians 2:9)

“However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’—the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

As Paul says in this passage, God has great plans in store for you. As His followers, we do not need to doubt Him. God is capable of the impossible (Matthew 19:26). It could be that marriage is in God’s plans for you, but He has something else for you to do first. Perhaps God is calling you to the mission field. Or maybe He is calling you to step out in faith into a new job, to go back to school, or to heal lasting wounds from childhood.

Trust God with your future. He has everything under control. It can be a challenge to give control over to God, but He truly knows best. The future He has for you is greater than anything you could ever imagine. God can do immeasurably more than all we could imagine or ask (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Where do you feel God is calling you today? Perhaps He is not calling you to go on a first date, but to join a local church. Connect with your local church community and engulf yourself in the Bible. Listen to God’s calling in your life. Whether you stay single or get married, it is vital to listen to God’s voice and obey Him.

Dear God, the many plans you have for my future bring joy into my heart. Even if these plans do not include a spouse, I will rejoice. You will always be with me, even when I feel alone. Please guide me into these plans. Show me the path You have paved for me. Glory belongs to You in the highest, God. Amen.
