“And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.” Luke 1:38 (ESV)

Have you ever received exciting news that changed the course of your life? Perhaps it was news of a long-awaited pregnancy or a favorable health diagnosis. Maybe you were selected for a major job promotion or called to the mission field. These occasions are reasons to rejoice, but even the best news can be wrapped in questions.

Will I deliver a healthy child?
Will my illness return?
Am I the right one for the job?
Am I equipped for this calling?

Imagine Mary’s surprise when the angel Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (Luke 1:30-31, ESV).

This ordinary young girl received the most remarkable, life-changing news, and though she must have had questions, she ultimately trusted God’s divine plan.

Friend, our actions always follow the beliefs of our hearts. Though Mary didn’t fully understand what was to come — how could she? — she trusted the Lord enough to say, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

What an incredible heart posture in the face of life’s uncertainty!

No matter what tidings of great joy we receive, it’s up to us to trust God’s holy and perfect plan. Even when we have more questions than answers, ultimately, we can choose to trust and obey. We don’t need to perfectly understand a perfect plan when we walk in the way of a perfect Savior.

This Christmas, ponder the ways God has blessed you with opportunities to serve Him and others. Bring your questions to Him, knowing you are invited to the throne of grace to receive mercy and help in your time of need (Hebrews 4:16). Most of all, pattern your faith after Mary, who said, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. Help me continue to trust You with every plan and purpose, even when I’m uncertain of the outcome. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
