Finding Courage in the Toughest Motherhood Circumstances

“My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:2 (CSB)

What’s so scary about our fears is the fact that so many of them could come true.

As moms, most of our fears revolve around our children and families. We want to protect our kids and give them the best lives we possibly can — to calculate every risk, provide for every need, assess all possible outcomes, and set them up for success.

But what happens when your kid gets very sick, or your child is exposed to something they shouldn’t have seen, or your husband loses his job, or you have chronic pain and can’t make dinner for your kids, or you live under the shadow of poor decisions your parents made — then what?

These things might be true in your life. And they are indeed scary.

But here’s what else is true: We serve the God whose footsteps thunder across the earth, who set the boundaries of the sea behind doors and gave the dawn its place so it seizes the edges of the earth (Job 38). Our God walks the depths of the oceans, holds lightning in His hands and chains together the constellations in the night sky.

All of this is truer and surer than the scary circumstances you face right now. So here’s the question: When life gets scary, what truth will win in your heart? What truth will ultimately triumph?

As women of God, we can be courageous in the knowledge that God has ordained all of our days and that He is always with us. It’s the Lord who protects us and keeps us in perfect peace as we call on Him.

“My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).

But here’s the deal — we’re not being asked never to fear ever again. God is asking us to fear Him more. Let’s keep our fears in perspective because the scariest thing that could ever happen to us is being separated from God — and He’s already protected us from that in Christ.

Things might get a lot scarier in our motherhood journeys. We might make mistakes — even some major ones. Any number of hard things might happen to us and our children. But we can be moms who overcome fear with fear. The fear of the Lord can always triumph in our hearts because no matter what happens, we can trust in the character of God today, knowing that we have a secure, eternal inheritance and will live forever with Christ.

This gives us courage over the scary circumstances in our lives.

Let’s be moms who fear the Lord.

Dear Lord, You promised us that we would face trouble in this world. But You also promised that You have overcome this world, and through You, we can have peace that passes all understanding (John 16:33). Help us to have courage because of who You are, despite the scary situations we’re facing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
