“Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.” – Psalm 27:10, NIV.

Have you been misunderstood, overlooked, or even excluded by some people in your family? Many people struggle with broken family relationships, especially during the holiday season. Maybe you’re estranged from a parent, sibling, or other relative. Perhaps you’ve been deliberately excluded from family gatherings, leaving you to spend holidays and special occasions separated from those who are supposed to be close to you. Or, maybe your family constantly overlooks you. Perhaps you’re the quiet one, the one who always fades into the background at celebrations. You show up, but you leave feeling unseen. This is also a form of exclusion that can erode your spirit.

The pain of these situations can feel crushing, especially when you see picture-perfect family photos flooding social media.

If this is your story, Psalm 27:10 encourages you: even if a close family member – such as your father or mother – forsakes you, Jesus will receive you.

When you’re dealing with family conflict and estrangement, it’s normal to feel a lot of difficult emotions. You might feel grief for the relationships you wish you had. You might feel shame if others are trying to blame you for the estrangement, even though it’s never just one person’s fault. You may feel lonely, particularly when the world is focused on celebrating family.

These feelings are valid. You don’t have to minimize your pain to honor God. In fact, bringing your honest pain to God is the first step toward healing.

Jesus knew what it was like to be forsaken by his own family. Mark 3:21 reveals that when Jesus began his public ministry, his own family thought he was “out of his mind.” Later, they even tried to stop him! Imagine the Son of God, the Savior of the world, being told he was crazy by his own mother and brothers. Jesus experienced the misunderstanding, stress, and pain of family conflict.

But Psalm 27:10 declares that what humans withhold, God unconditionally provides.

When the door to your earthly family is closed to you, Jesus opens his arms. When your chair at the family table is empty, Jesus invites you to the heavenly feast. When your relatives try to define you by your past mistakes or flaws, Jesus defines you by his perfect love and sacrifice for you.

The family Jesus creates isn’t based on shared DNA or tradition. It’s based only on your faith in him. When you place your trust in Jesus, you’re immediately and permanently adopted into the most loving family, forever! Your place in God’s family is secure for eternity. Once you’re adopted, you can’t be forsaken. Deuteronomy 31:6 assures you that God “will never leave you nor forsake you.” No family drama can ever revoke your membership in God’s family!

Jesus loves you completely and unconditionally. You don’t have to earn God’s love. You don’t have to perform perfectly, be a specific type of personality, or fix all your problems before he accepts you. Jesus loved you “while you were still a sinner” (Romans 5:8). His love for you doesn’t depend on your behavior; it depends on his faithful character.

You are one of God’s beloved children forever! God sees you, knows your pain, and includes you completely. You have fellow believers – your spiritual brothers and sisters – in our family. This community is a true family, where you can find love, support, and a sense of belonging right here on earth.

The pain of family rejection is real, but you don’t have to focus on it. Instead of worrying about the earthly connections that failed you, embrace the love God offers you, which will never fail.

Spend time enjoying God’s presence with you, and let the truth of Psalm 27:10 wash away the pain your human family causes you. When you feel lonely or excluded, remind yourself: “The LORD will receive me.” He has already received you. He calls you “beloved.” He calls you “mine.”

Your earthly family situation doesn’t define you. Your identity comes from your Creator, who calls you his beloved child and gives you a place in his family forever.

Let’s pray:

Dear God, my heart aches from the pain of being rejected by my family, especially when I see other families with the relationships I wish I had. Thank you for seeing me, appreciating me, and loving me completely and unconditionally. Right now, I’m laying down the burden of trying to earn acceptance from my human family, the people who have chosen not to love me as they should. Instead of worrying about them, I’m embracing the great love you offer me through my relationship with Jesus. Please heal my wounds, give me peace, and help me to rest in the confidence that I’m your beloved child who is permanently included in your eternal family. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so I can see my true brothers and sisters in Christ and experience the community you’ve designed for my life. Thank you, God. Amen.

When our hearts feel troubled, Jesus invites us to trust Him again.

This short midweek prayer creates space to pause, breathe deeply, and return to Jesus’s words in John 14:1–6, where He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” In this guided prayer, we acknowledge the places where worry, uncertainty, or longing have unsettled our hearts and bring them honestly before God.

Jesus reminds us that we are not alone—that He is with us, that He is preparing a place for us, and that He will return for us. As we pray, we ask for help to trust Him more deeply and to follow Him in the way He has already made clear: to love God fully and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Take a few quiet minutes to slow down, listen for God’s invitation, and rest in the presence of the One who leads us in truth and life. If you like what you hear, follow So Much More on Apple or Spotify so you never miss an episode!
