“He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32

Friends recently lost their only son through illness. He was their Golden Boy. Even though my heart goes out to them and I tried to find the right words to say, I realize no words are able to soothe such a great loss. Still, I attempted to reach out the best I could, asking God to help me carefully choose my words.

Our friends are not alone, as we know many friends and family who have gone through the pain and agony of losing a beloved child, whether in the womb, as an infant, child, teen, or adult; it’s a grievous experience for all parents who experience it.

As a hospice chaplain, my husband ministers to many families experiencing this kind of deeply sorrowful loss and pain. It’s heartbreaking for all involved.

Although many of us who have not experienced their kind of loss have compassion and empathy, it’s not the kind of understanding comfort that comes from another parent who has experienced this kind of grief-stricken, heart-wrenching sorrow and pain.

In life, there are experiences others have where we may lack understanding, so it’s not possible for us to fully know what they are going through, but God truly does understand.

“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.” 1 John 4:9

For parents on earth, it’s such a tragic, heartbreaking trial to lose a child. Because of this, they may have a deeper understanding than most of what it was like for God to give us Jesus as a redeeming sacrifice.

God, in His love for us and for the salvation of humankind, gave His only, perfect Son to be given as an atoning sacrifice to save us from eternal separation from Him.

As John 3:16 explains, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Still, many of us brush over those words, not recognizing God’s role as Father and what it was like for Him to go through seeing Jesus beaten and crucified. We don’t consider the possible grief and sorrow He may have experienced. Ephesians 4:30 and Genesis 6:6 reveal how God experiences grief.

Being made in His image means we feel the things He feels, including grief and sorrow. He, above all else, is able to comfort us. As 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 assures, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

As our loving Father, He knew there was no other way for Him to save us, so He made the ultimate sacrifice, one some of us at times so casually brush over, not taking into consideration what it took for a loving, perfect Father to give over His Son to a fallen world that didn’t deserve such a perfect gift.

But it was the only way, as Romans 5:12 describes, “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.”

So God sent us Jesus, as 1 John 2:2 describes, “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Through Jesus, we are made righteous, transforming our relationship with God from broken to made new. As Romans 5:19 explains, “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.”

Let’s pray:
Dear Father, Thank you for sending Your only Son, Jesus, as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Our hearts are forever grateful to You for Your most precious gift to us. Comfort those today, Lord, who have lost a child, as only You can comfort them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
