A Prayer to Redeem the Time When Every Day Feels the Same
By Sophia Bricker

Bible Reading:
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” - Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV

Listen or Read Below:

The popular saying, “variety is the spice of life,” is often true. When we mix up our days and throw in different events, even if it's just a new recipe, we find our interest and energy renewed. But sometimes variety is not an option. Work must be done, and it must be completed according to a schedule with established practices and times. Likewise, students understand that school involves getting accustomed to the regular rotation of bus rides or carpools, classes, textbooks, and homework. Routine is often essential in maintaining productivity and a sustainable livelihood.

Most of us acknowledge the need for consistency in life, even if we enjoy variety. However, doing so becomes challenging when our days start to feel monotonous. We do the same things, live by the same rhythms, and begin to think that every day seems the same. It can feel as if we are stuck in an endless loop, much like the one depicted in the movie Groundhog Day. This can even impact our spiritual life, leading us to perceive our faith as stagnant because of the general rut we find ourselves in daily. Prayer and Bible reading become merely another part of our repetitive schedule. At this point, we may be tempted to view mundane moments as unimportant.

Yet, those very moments are the ones that matter the most. Are we loving others amid the daily grind of work, family, school, and chores? Do we seek God’s hand in our lives by pausing to notice and give thanks for the new mercies He provides every morning? Will we continue to trust in the goodness of our Lord even if the ongoing cycle of schedules overwhelms us?

Scripture tells us that we are meant to make the most of every moment by redeeming the time that has been entrusted to us. Every day may feel the same, but our faithfulness in the workaday grind is vital. Each second of our lives matters. The Bible tells us that we should number our days, which means giving thought to how we live now and recognizing that it will affect eternity (Psalm 90:12). The Lord has entrusted each of us with time––and it matters what we do with it.

If we are wise, we will give careful thought to our daily walk as a disciple on this pilgrimage called life. Like the faithful servants in Jesus’ parable of the talents, we will use what our Master has given and multiply it through obedience (Matthew 25:14-30). Squandering our days or viewing them as insignificant will not bring us the praise of Christ.

There may be things within our current schedule that should be removed to make room for other priorities. We can do so, adding in other plans or events, which may bring excitement. However, as much as we can give thanks for the added spice to our lives, our focus should be on the Lord. Carefully considering our days involves utilizing every resource for the glory of God.

Let’s Pray:

God of every moment, teach me to number my days with wisdom.

Help me to consider my steps from the viewpoint of eternity, remembering how I live now matters, regardless of the monotony or excitement. How I respond to boredom from repetitive schedules matters. Turn my eyes, O Lord, to the daily beauty and love You provide amid my plans and problems. May I pause and give thanks for these gifts, allowing them to give me hope when every day feels the same.

Work through me, Holy Spirit, so that I may live a fruitful life with the time that has been entrusted to me, making the most of every opportunity. And prevent me from wasting the opportunities I have each day in my busy routine so that I love others as I should, serve with kindness, and speak with grace, for You are a good and loving Lord who has generously given me new life and freedom from sin.

I want to honor You with how I use my time. Amen.
