A Prayer to Remember God’s Protective Shield Around Us
By: Amanda Idleman

Bible Reading:
He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. - Psalm 91:4

Listen or Read Below:

In one of my kids' cute preschool board books, today’s verse is summarized this way: God protects me like a shield. When my kids were little, I remember us chanting these words and putting our arms up around ourselves to signify God’s powerful shield. During this same season of life, I was battling anxiety and depression. One night, my husband was away for work, and fear was hovering over me like a dark cloud. I sat in my bed, chanting this truth to myself: God protects me like a shield.

It’s a simple truth, but one that we must revisit often. The world is dark, full of chaos, and loss. It’s only natural to fear the unknown. Quickly, we forget that we are never alone in our circumstances. Nonetheless, our minds love to imagine the worst-case outcomes rather than meditating on the goodness of the Lord. In those moments, it can feel like the darkness is greater than the light, but all it takes is a willingness to accept one of God’s promises as fact for you to usher His peace in.

If you are feeling like I did in my empty dark house, desperately clinging to the hope that is God’s protection over us, you are invited to remember how gracious and powerful our God is. We are secure in God’s arms. He is a good Father and will not let the chaos have the last say in our lives. He is writing a story through us, His beloved children, that glimmers of Heaven.

Additionally, he is gentle with us. He enters the dark room with us, turning on the light so we can see more clearly. It’s the enemy of our souls that wants us to believe we are hopelessly vulnerable in this life. But with God as our Father, we always have the God-of-angel-armies on our side!

Romans 8:31 says, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” With God, we have the ultimate protection, which is actively going before us every single day. When our minds are crowded with negative and fearful thoughts, cling to this reality. God is for us. We have all we need for every season by his grace. His love covers our sin. He promises a hope and a future for us. We can trust in his name. Remember you are protected, you are loved, and you are never alone.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord,

We are so thankful for Your promise to protect us like a shield. You go before us and make a way even when it looks like there is no way. Help us remember Your faithfulness, and that Your light is more powerful than the darkness.

We ask in the name of Jesus that You would banish the darkness and fear that would want me to believe I am alone, vulnerable, and that there is no hope in this world. Allow me to live with confidence, assured that the best is yet to come. I trust that You are good and able to provide all I need for every season and trial. You are writing a good story out of my life, and the darkness will not prevail.

Let me have faith that Your protection is wide and strong enough to care for those I love. Your hands are covering my home, my family, my marriage, my children, and my loved ones. You will never leave or forsake Your people.

When evil thoughts of despair and fear come into my mind, help me to capture them. Allow me to meditate on the truth of scripture rather than the torment that is fear and anxiety. Cover my life, my thoughts, and my home with Your perfect peace.

I thank You that You are a great God—so much bigger and better than I could ever imagine. When I am unsure if You are able, help me remember I am merely dust. You hold our world together; You know my story. Make something beautiful out of me. Don’t let the evil of this world win in my life, but let Your name be glorified through my story!

Amen.
