A Prayer to Remember That Jesus Loves Me

“Mom, do you think your cup is big enough?” my daughter playfully asked.
I am an avid coffee drinker. You know those people who keep a full cup of joe by their side all day long? Yep, that’s me! I know, I know, some are now concerned about my caffeine intake, but for me, it’s not about the boost in energy; I just like the warm feeling the coffee provides as my hands grip the mug, and the smooth liquid radiates through my body.
As for my favorite coffee cup, and the object of my daughter’s joke, while it can hold a good amount of coffee, that’s not why it’s my preferred mug. In big bold letters, the front reads, “Jesus Loves Me,” and the back says,” And don’t you forget it.” Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve learned that God loves me. In fact, He loved me so much that He sent His only Son to die for me! I wholeheartedly believe that God loved me enough to provide a way for me to be with Him forever. But, often, I wonder if amid my constant struggle with sin, perhaps God’s love for me wanes day by day.
A quick reference to Scripture reveals that God’s love is constant; it doesn’t change from day to day. His love is not dependent on my feelings towards Him, obedience to His commands, or my continual engagement in sin. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. Love is at the core of who God is. And while love can be earned or lost in our human relationships, that is not true of God’s love. So, if you, like me, need a reminder that God’s love isn’t just applied to us for Salvation, but for everyday life, then take time to meditate on these Scriptures and go to the Lord in prayer!
God's love is not dependent on our actions: “if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself” (1 Timothy 2:13).
Lord, thank you that Your love for me doesn’t depend on my performance. I can’t earn Your love, or lose Your passion. You are faithful even when we are not. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
God's love is not conditional - it can't be taken away: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?” (Romans 8:35).
Lord, what a gift that nothing can separate me from Your love. Help me remember that, although human relationships and love may be lost or abused, that doesn’t apply to Your love. Your love is unconditional, abundant, and filled with grace and mercy. Amen.
God's love is not transactional - it can't be earned: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast, for we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-10).
Lord, when I try to earn Your love, remind me that I have been saved by grace, through faith. Just like salvation, there’s nothing I can do to gain Your love, and that’s a good thing because that means there’s nothing I can do to lose Your love. Help me find freedom in knowing that before the beginning of time, You loved me! May my response be to your extravagant love for me, to show Your love to others, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Friend, remember today that you are loved by God, who not only created you but desires to be in a relationship with you!
Let’s Pray:
Heavenly Father, I am not sure why I sometimes believe the lie that I am unloveable, that one day I am going to wake up and You are going to love me less because of I what I did I didn’t do. Help me to remember the Truth of Scriptures that Your love is not dependent on me, it’s not conditional, and it's not transactional.
When I try to earn Your love, remind me that I have been saved by grace, through faith. Just like salvation, there’s nothing I can do to gain Your love, and that’s a good thing because that means there’s nothing I can do to lose Your love. Help me find freedom in knowing that before the beginning of time, You loved me! May my response be to your extravagant love for me, to show Your love to others.
The very essence of Who You are is Love, and in a world where love is fickle, let me remember that You are not. Let the words of Romans 5:8 reign in our hearts and minds, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
