A Prayer to Serve the Lord with Gladness
By Keneesha Saunders-Liddie

Bible Reading:
“Serve the Lord with gladness, come before his presence with singing.” - Psalms 100:2

Listen or Read Below:

What a mighty God we serve! We don’t just have to serve Him; we get to serve Him. That is how we should be thinking each morning we awake. Our God is worthy to be served every single day. Do you spend a lot of time focused on serving yourself? Our culture today calls for a lot of self-service and comfort for one’s own body, but serving Christ should always be first. What an honor it is for many service members to be a part of the service industry of their country. Whether they are the army, navy, or Air Force, they take pride in putting their country above themselves. They also serve with pride and joy. Well, we are a part of God’s army, and we should have the same caliber of service and attitude toward our God.

Just the benefits he provides us daily are enough to cause us to serve the Lord with gladness. The benefits extend from complex matters and come down to the simple ability to breathe. He is our provider, protector, Savior, and our keeper. We don’t keep ourselves; God is the one keeping us and making sure to keep our feet from dashing against a stone. We should serve the Lord with gladness because of who he is. He is faithful, loving, kind, and compassionate towards us.

Our key passage tells us to come before his presence with singing. Some of the angels have the awesome job of worshipping God all the time. Every day they sing holy, holy, holy to the King of kings. That is how we should be; always ready to serve, to praise, and sing the matchless love of our God. We are always in his presence because he sees everything; therefore, we should praise him continuously. Just as we should pray without ceasing, our lives should be in continuous service to God. He should be a part of every aspect of our lives. When we eat, drive, travel, shower, swim, and work. All that we do should magnify and serve our Lord.

Being a Christian is not just when we attend church; it is a lifestyle. Every fiber of our being should serve the Lord. Note that serving God should be done with gladness. It is a privilege to serve God, so we should be glad/ happy to serve him. We should come before God with a heart of thankful gratitude. Don’t be unhappy about the bad things or trials in your life. Focus on the blessings because they always outweigh the bad, and singing can lift the spirit. This is one way to serve the Lord with gladness through joyful singing. Our key verse is found in the hymnbook of the Israelite nation in a song of praise. God is telling us what he desires and what he deserves. Let us serve him with gladness and come before his presence with singing because he is worthy. Our God is worthy because there is none like him; he has no equal or rival, so let us serve him humbly with grateful hearts.

Has God been good to you? When it's time to serve him with other worshippers, don’t sing and worship like you are still dead in trespasses and sin. Sing as loud as you can; come into his presence with singing. Let God know how you feel through song and serve him with gladness.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, I come into your presence thankful for the opportunity to pray and commune with you.
Thank you for your goodness in my life that extends from generation to generation. I want to always serve you with gladness, so please help me to always be in a posture of prayer so I can come into your presence with singing. There is so much you have done for me that I’m so grateful that I get to serve you. Forgive me, Oh Lord, if my service has come from a place of disbelief or ungratefulness. You are indeed a mighty God, and there is no one like you. Help me to realize that it is a privilege to serve a God who is alive, the miracle-working God who can do exceedingly and abundantly much more than I can ask. You are not like man-made gods of this world who need to be built, carried, or fed. You created me, sustain me, provide for me, and protect me. I promise from this day on to serve you with my whole being, my finances, my vehicles, and everything else you have given me. I promise, dear Lord, to serve you foremost with gladness and to always come into your presence with singing just because You are.
In Jesus’ holy and matchless name, amen.
