Your Nightly Prayer

Are You Fighting the Good Fight?
Your Nightly Prayer for May 16, 2025
By Lynette Kittle

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses”--1 Timothy 6:12

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Many of us want to resist fighting with others online, at work, in our community, in our homes, and with our neighbors. We want a peaceful life and to live at peace, like the Apostle Paul urges in Romans 12:18,” If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

And of course, Paul is right. Yet, life is filled with situations, where when it comes to our faith, we either have to give in and give up, or fight.

Living a peaceful life of faith doesn’t seem to be completely possible in our day and age, and maybe it hasn’t been at any age. After all, Paul seemed to spend a lot of time in prison.

Every day, our faith is challenged by the enemy of our souls, who works through people who want to challenge or completely run over our faith, pushing us to fight, whether we want to or not.

Like Paul proclaims in Romans 1:16, are we boldly living out our faith? “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

The only way we can avoid being confronted altogether is to deny our faith and to compromise our beliefs. Even though Paul tells us to live peacefully, if possible, he also tells us how to gear up to fight, as described in Ephesians 6:13-17:

“Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Father,
As Paul encourages, help us to live in peace as much as possible in our lives. As well, strengthen and uplift us to put on Your armor so that we can fight the good fight of faith when needed. Help us to stand firm in our faith and fight when necessary, to not back down or lie down, when challenged by the enemy.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. What do you do when challenged about your faith? Do you choose to say nothing, or do you turn to God and ask Him to help you address it in a way that honors Him?

2. In times of spiritual battles, where are you finding your strength? If asked to deny your faith, how do you respond?

3. Are you presently facing a challenge to your faith? If so, ask God to help you put on His full armor so that you can stand firm.
