TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” - Matthew 9:36

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Matthew so beautifully unfolds that Jesus did not just physically see the crowds; he saw their condition. Jesus spent time traveling through towns and villages, teaching, proclaiming the good news, and healing people of diseases and pain. He saw how they were weighed down, troubled, worn out, exhausted, and vulnerable. Sounds a lot like us!

Life comes at us fast and hard sometimes. Christ sees our discouraged hearts. And how does He approach us? With great compassion. Before He wants to heal us, teach us something, or send someone to help, He first says, “I see you.” I picture Jesus taking his hands and holding our faces, looking deep in our eyes, saying, "Child, I see your condition-what troubles you. Like the kind of “I see you” that says "I know everything about you.”

If we experienced Jesus like that, how would we respond? Would our eyes not be able to accept His gaze because of guilt and shame? Guilt and shame cause us to distance ourselves from God, yet He says, "I’m close." His eyes wouldn’t say, “Why can’t you get it together?” or “You should be stronger by now.” His eyes gently say, “You’re tired,” “You’ve been carrying too much,” and most importantly, “Allow me to shepherd you.” Jesus’ compassion is not triggered by our own strength, as that will come up short every time. He desires to shepherd us.

Shepherds protect and guide their sheep- defending them against harm, leading them in truth. Truth that provides us with both direction and purpose. May we take moments where we lean into His promptings, calling us to rest in Him, discouragement and all. We were not meant to live as sheep without a shepherd. He longs to be present, walking with us every step of the way.

Remember life before smartphones, when driving somewhere unfamiliar meant pulling out a bulky road atlas. We had to study it ahead of time, trace each turn, and hope we didn’t miss an exit. There was no calm voice reminding, “Turn left in one mile,” and no loud voice of correction when we made a wrong turn. One mistake could leave us lost, frustrated, and unsure how to get back on track. That’s what life can feel like when we try to figure it out on our own—without making room to listen to God’s voice. How different it is now, when a steady voice guides us, recalculates when we wander, and makes sure we’ll reach where we are headed?!

God’s voice speaks to us through His Word in the same way. Scripture is living and active, leading us step by step, correcting us with grace, and never abandoning us when we lose our way. Never were we meant to navigate life by instinct alone. We were created to be led by a Shepherd who sees us, knows our condition, and lovingly guides us home.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Jesus,
May I sense your presence and desire you to be the shepherd of my life. For the times I have not recognized your gaze, may I sense it tonight. Thank you for reminding me that you know me inside and out and that you look upon me with eyes of compassion, ready to meet me right where I am. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Have I allowed God to shepherd me?

2. Have I sensed God’s compassionate gaze?

3. Have I held onto guilt and shame, preventing me from all God has?
