Choosing Faith When Fear Creeps In
Your Nightly Prayer for Jan. 15, 2025
by Rachel Wojo, Host of the Untangling Prayer podcast

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day." - Psalm 91:4-5

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Why is it that the worries we manage to keep at bay during the day often feel so much bigger at night? Maybe I’m the only one, but it seems like the quiet of darkness magnifies every anxious thought and amplifies every fear.

In those moments, Psalm 91 offers a comforting promise: God’s love surrounds us like a protective shield. Just as an eagle covers her young with her wings, God wraps us in His love, guarding us against the fears that try to take root in our hearts. His perfect love casts out all fear, and when I’m struggling to choose faith, I find hope in the bold declarations of these verses.

Faith becomes a shield, reminding us of God’s unshakable faithfulness. Though the arrows of doubt and worry may fly, they cannot penetrate the fortress of His promises. Choosing faith doesn’t mean pretending fear doesn’t exist—it means placing that fear in God’s hands, trusting Him to defend us.

Psalm 91 paints a powerful picture of a God who is both near and active, shielding us from harm and guiding us through uncertainty. So when fear creeps in, declare the truth of His Word over your heart: “I will not fear the terror of the night, for my God is with me.”

EVENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
When fear creeps in and threatens to steal my peace, help me to anchor my heart in faith. Thank You for covering me with Your wings, wrapping me in Your love, and shielding me from harm. Remind me that Your faithfulness is my unshakable defense against the worries and doubts that try to overwhelm me. Tonight, I surrender every fear into Your capable hands and choose to rest in the safety of Your presence. Thank You for being my refuge, now and always. Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Something comforting. A promise, a treat, or maybe a greeting.

2. Something that no longer makes you afraid.

3. Someone lovely. Who has crossed your path that makes you want to know Jesus better? For me, this is my friend, Sharon.
