TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.” - Galatians 5:6

SOMETHING TO PONDER

My son was one of those kids who loved to figure out how things worked. His mind soaked up information about the galaxies or computers, and when he got older, his talents and interests helped him excel at cybersecurity and music. As he discovered how things worked, he gained skills in problem-solving.

In Galatians, Paul gives a secret to how faith works. He writes the church in Galatia, and he expresses one main concern: how they have come to believe the works of the Jewish law were necessary for faith. Paul dealt with this several times and in several ways throughout his ministry. As a Jew educated in the Law, he knew the danger of placing eternal worth on external traditions like circumcision. Jewish history had clearly proved how being physically circumcised (along with other rituals) had no ability to make people holy or obedient to God. Jesus brought a deeper solution, one that worked, the gifts of faith and grace.

Therefore, Paul tells the Galatians how neither circumcision nor uncircumcision could benefit them spiritually. However, through Christ, faith can work through love.

Faith is a gift of God, to hear him and follow what he says (Hebrews 11). Since he is the source and object of true faith, and God is love, his word will naturally flow into loving actions. Love seeks the eternal best for all people, everyone we encounter. Love becomes the evidence of our faith. If we want to know if faith is working in our lives, we can ask the question: is our motive to love others as Christ loved us?

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of faith and the grace that works through love. Teach me to trust in you, not in traditions or rituals but the power of Christ alone. Fill my heart with your love, reflecting you, so my faith produces obedience that honors you. Help me seek the eternal good of others, showing your love in every encounter. Let my life be evidence of true faith, rooted in your truth and love.
In Jesus name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. What are ways you can get distracted by external measures of how faith works? What would those false measures be?

2. How has Christ loved you? How have you experienced the love of God in your life?

3. How does your faith in Christ lead to loving others as he’s loved you? How should it be?
