TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made” - Psalm 145:9

SOMETHING TO PONDER

As many know, life can take unpredictable turns, some harsh and unexpected, that take our breath away and knock us off our feet for a while. When it does, we can be assured that God is there to catch us, breathe new life into us, and pick us up off the floor, understanding and gentle in His dealings with us.

The Apostle Paul describes the gentleness of God in 2 Corinthians 10:1: “By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am ‘timid’ when face to face with you, but 'bold' toward you when away!”

Also, in looking at scripture, we see how Jesus was gentle with the woman at the well, the woman caught in adultery, and a tax-collector named Zacchaeus sitting in a tree.

Although they were experiencing the weariness of living in this world, Jesus’ gentleness led them to a new life in Him.

Still, at times, life can feel like it’s beating us up pretty badly. Everywhere we turn, there is another disappointment, one more loss, and more unpleasant things taking place.

When life seems to assault us, Jesus directs us in Matthew 11:29 to, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Although taking on a yoke sounds like something confining and burdensome, Christ’s yoke is where He takes on the weight of our heaviness, and we find rest in His way of gentleness and humility.

So in those times when we want to run away from the unpredictability of our lives and the world around us, to escape at least for a time from all the changes taking place, Jesus is our safe place, where we can go and experience the gentleness of God, where our weary hearts and souls can find rest.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Father,
Thank you for your gentleness towards us and for giving us a safe and comforting place in You to go to when our lives are taking unpredictable turns. Lead us in Your ways and strengthen us to yield to Your gentle leadership in life. Help us to trust You with our uncertainty and to release our heaviness to You truly. Draw us in to take hold of the rest we find in You, knowing You gently guide us through life’s unpredictable changes.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. How has life been treating you lately? Are you trying to navigate its many changes, twists, and turns? If so, seek to follow and learn from Christ by taking on His yoke of gentleness and humility.

2. Consider writing down how you feel about life’s changes and praying over them as you look to God to carry the burden of your worries, cares, and concerns for you.

3. Set time aside to read through the Book of James for encouragement and guidance in practical, biblical ways to face life's changes.
