Your Nightly Prayer

In Christ, the Fullness of God
Your Nightly Prayer for Feb. 14, 2025
by Britt Mooney

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” - John 1:16

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Sometimes, I open a bag of potato chips, see it’s only half full, and say, “Is this it?” Of course, after years of such disappointment, I regularly expect a bulk of the chip bag to be full of air. In our culture, this happens often. We pay for something with a certain expectation and realize it is far smaller or less than we thought we paid for. Less than we think we deserve. As a result, we become excited when the chip bag is full when we get more than we expected.

Dealing with God, however, he promises abundance. One of my favorite praise songs a few years ago started with, “Your love is extravagant.” Too much. Too costly. More than we would have expected or deserved. Jesus promises eternal life. Not just a little but an abundance (John 10:10). God so loved the world that he gave the best he had, his only Son, also God himself. God’s compassionate and generous nature didn’t hold back, not even his own Son (Romans 8:32). Within Christ, the fullness of God exists (Colossians 2:9).

God shares it all with us. The work of Christ invites us to live in him, eternally, seated at the right hand of God right now. At the same time, the Holy Spirit (also fully God) lives within us. Not a half-bag-of-chips version of the Spirit but the full one. There’s only one Spirit, not a baby version for us.

Instead of finding a half bag of air when we open the chips, what if they tumbled out and exploded into the air? What if it was a never-ending supply?

That’s what God has given those who repent and follow him through Christ: an eternal and infinite life to enjoy now and forever.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your extravagant love and overflowing generosity. You gave us not a portion but the fullness of yourself in Christ, offering eternal and abundant life beyond what we could expect or deserve. Help us live in awe of your limitless love and grace, guided and confirmed by your Spirit within us. Let us trust in your promises, find joy in all the gracious gifts you’ve provided, and may our lives express gratitude for your treasure of grace.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. What are times when you feel disappointed with what you’ve received?

2. What was a time in life when you were given far more than you expected?

3. Meditate on how your gratitude and thankfulness should reflect the reality of being given God’s fullness in Christ
