TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” - 2 Corinthians 9:15

SOMETHING TO PONDER

What do you consider the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received? Was it something you hoped, asked, and prayed for? Or, a total surprise, something you wouldn’t have ever dreamed would be given to you or could belong to you?

Some of us might say a special piece of jewelry, tickets to a concert, a favorite box of chocolate, or a prized toy received during childhood. Whoever gave it to us most likely knew what we wanted or needed, or knew us well enough to know that the gift was something we would love and treasure for years to come.

More than anyone else in our lives, God knows us best. Some of us may find that hard to believe, but He knows us intimately better than we know ourselves. Because He does, James 1:17 describes that when God gives a gift, it’s perfect.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

As perfect as past Christmas gifts received may have seemed to us at the time and even years later, there is a true Christmas gift given to us from God, the gift of Jesus.

His extravagant, priceless, and irreplaceable gift to us is perfect, as John 3:16 explains, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

His gift is the ultimate gift, a forever gift, as the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin are death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God gave us His all, as Romans 8:32 explains His sacrifice in giving us Jesus. “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”

Christmas’s true gift is God’s sacrificial gift, Jesus, the most perfect gift ever given.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace—(Isaiah 9:6).

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Father,
Thank you for Your indescribable gift of Jesus, Your perfect Son, and the true gift of Christmas. No gift throughout all time even compares to what You have given us. Our hearts are moved by knowing we’ve done nothing to deserve such a priceless gift, yet out of Your love for us, You made the ultimate sacrifice by giving us Jesus. Inspire our hearts to dwell on this truth, that the gift You’ve given us is the most precious one we will ever receive. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Consider the Christmas gifts you’ve received throughout your life. Which ones stand out to you, and why? What causes you to remember them?

2. Take time to meditate on John 3:16 and God’s great love for us and how it moved Him to give us Jesus.

3. Because Jesus is the true gift of Christmas, are you willing to give Him to others this Christmas? If so, in what ways is that possible?
