Your Nightly Prayer

A Cure for the Fidgety Spirit
Your Nightly Prayer for Feb. 7, 2025
by Michelle Treacy

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”-
Psalm 46:10

SOMETHING TO PONDER

I am the type of person who likes to be busy by nature. But I am also very good at finding things to do to be busy when I just don’t want to listen to my own brain, my own thoughts, or my feelings. When my emotions are too much, I like to do things to drown them out. And yet the Psalmist says, “Be still and Know I am God.” For someone like me, that’s not always easy! Maybe you are getting ready for bed and thinking the same thing.

Another night, staring at the ceiling. Another night, counting the patterns on the wall.

Well, friend, what if there was another way?

What if this evening, as we tuck ourselves into bed, we could do something else?

What if sleep was really an option?

This idea of being still is not a command for us from God to do nothing. The word “still” here is a Hebrew word, “Rapa,” and it means to “slacken, let go, or cease.” The idea of the Hebrew word comes from the idea of a fight between two people. Then someone intervenes and those fighting have to set down their weapons, it is only then that they acknowledge their trust in God. Those of us who love the Lord are simply being asked not to fight our own battles but rather look to the Lord to fight for us.

So, this evening, as the thoughts of another sleepless night navigating your own fights are what’s preventing your sleep, maybe take a breath and let go, Rapa, and cease fighting. Turn your gaze heavenward and allow God to take control of those circumstances that have your mind and spirit fidgeting when it should be resting.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Father,
When night time comes, Lord and I can not fight and distract my mind with my to-do list, my job, my children, and my chores, and my mind becomes fidgety; I ask you to come and remind me to Be still. Not to lie here and do nothing, contemplating all the things I cannot fix and battles I am drowning in. But to lay down my need to fix everything and to trust you to be God. To lay down my need to fight for myself and entrust you with my circumstances, my problems, my needs, knowing you are faithful. Father God, you are my peace, you are my hope, you are my stronghold and as this Psalm begins you are my refuge and strength, help me this night to find my home and my safety in you.
In Jesus name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Being still is not doing nothing, but it is choosing to allow God to take over.

2. Some day, you will see God exalted among the nations; allow faith to rise; he will win, and He will restore all that is broken and lost.

3. Friend, maybe tonight we could imagine for a second a fortress. Just like those in the princess stories, and there in the bottom of it behind closed doors, can you imagine you? But you’re not alone; there in that fortress, there is you, and there is Jesus. That’s the image I would love you to see this evening in your mind. A hope of a protected fortress with Jesus by your side. Because if you know Jesus, that’s the truth of your position even now, even with the turbulence of life, He is with you, and He is your fortress and strength!
