Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel to The Passion of The Christ finally has a production date. Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà Studios in Italy, told Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper that The Resurrection of the Christ will begin production at the studio in August.

“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” she said.

The Passion of the Christ remains the highest-grossing faith-based film in history, with a domestic gross of $370.7 million and a worldwide gross of $622 million. Directed by Gibson, it tells the story of the arrest and crucifixion of Christ. Although the film ends with the resurrection, it occupies only a brief part of the movie.

The Resurrection of the Christ presumably will focus on the days before and after Christ’s resurrection.

In January, Gibson told host Andrew Erwin of The Storytellers podcast that the script is written. He described it as an “acid trip.” Gibson told The Joe Rogan Experience that The Resurrection of the Christ will examine the cosmic battle of good and evil. He, his brother, and screenwriter Randall Wallace collaborated on the script.

The sequel will include Jesus rising from the dead, though the plot will not be “linear,” he said.

“So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff,” Gibson said. “And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell.”

The Resurrection of the Christ will include gospel events but will be placed “in a framework where you answer a few other questions as well,” Gibson told Rogan.

Gibson told Erwin he believes the resurrection was a real historical event. Pointing to the disciples’ martyrdom, Gibson said, “No one dies for a lie.”

According to IMDB.com, it is scheduled for a 2026 release.
