CONQUERING HERO

An original contemporary Christian song by (C) Vernon Stanbridge 2019. Inspired by the Book of Revelation depicting Jesus riding the Heavens on a white charger followed by His people.

O Gods Lamb all flawless (Agnus Dei)

The "Agnus Dei" was adapted to Low German by Nicolaus Decius (in 1531). Later, Landstad, the editor and writer of the Norwegian hymn book, translated it to Norwegian, which is what you hear Kristine Kringlebotn Goa singing in this video. Rune Hodne Hermundsplass plays the guitar and put the original up on YouTube at https://youtu.be/-KbEcLUDNMs. With his kind permission I have then adapted it to a 3 verse version -or should I say, variation- that I have made on the theme. As visual background I have chosen to show the Stations of the Cross as depicted in various versions. These are pictures to help Christians meditate on the way Jesus took from Pilate to his death on the Cross. However, the story does not end on the cross, but in Christ's resurrection, which also underlies the Agnus: Jesus can give us His mercy and peace because He is not dead but alive, so I have chosen to end on that note! Landstad's Norwegian text is: O Guds Lam uskyldig På korset i helslaget Inntil døden lydig Hvor ille du var plaget For vår skyld var du såret Har verdens synder båret Miskunn deg over oss O Jesus (1st and 2nd time) .. Gi oss din fred O Herre Jesus (3rd time) Nicolaus Decius original text, which is still used in churches in Germany today is: Lamm Gottes, unschuldig am Stamm des Kreuzes geschlachtet,[a] allzeit erfunden geduldig, wiewohl du warest verachtet, all Sünd hast du getragen, sonst müssten wir verzagen. 1–2 Erbarm dich unser, o Jesu. 3 Gib deinen Frieden, o Jesu.

As I open up that old, guitar case again
I Look into a past, where my life begins
To Pick up that old, guitar and tune it up
And let the music, play until it’s enough
I did not, plan it that way
Some how that’s the way, the music flowed
Again, as I look, at that old guitar

I cannot forget, the main one I have

0:00 to 0:45 –Failure (v.10):
This theme and harmony express both emotional and physical scenes. The emotional feelings are stress, panic, chaos, defeat, and the anxiety of things simply going wrong. The physical scenes give context and greater meaning to these emotions. One of the scenes I imagine and relate to is the battlefield and its adrenaline-filled atmosphere created from war. Losing a battle and being surrounded by death produces a dramatic but real and stressful tragedy. This is one way we can see a “plan of a nation” being frustrated (v.10). On the other hand, I was very conscious that this portion of the psalm is not only referring to personal, human experiences but to massive, political issues. Therefore, the same theme also represents a political crisis that no king or ruler (like David) would like to be involved with: every project, every battle, every assignment, every subordinate is not working out; and there’s nothing anyone can do about it since it’s a decree from God...
