Let Me Run by Conscience Lingers

The black shirts, suits, and dresses rustled softly as the choir of Shadow Mountain Community Church’s ‘One Day (When We All Get to Heaven)’ performance bridged heaven and earth. Their rendition was a prayer wrapped in song, a yearning hymn for the promised day when all will be made new. 

‘One day you’ll make everything new, Jesus
One day You will bind every wound
The former things shall pass away
No more tears’

As the first notes of this Matt Redman song began, there was a sacred hush over the crowd. The kind that feels like the Holy Spirit moving through the room and filling the air with a hope that can’t be taken away or denied. They sang of the day we all yearn for. The day when every wound will be bound, every tear will be wiped away, and every question will finally be answered. Each part of the song carried the weight of the struggles we face in this world, but it also carried unspeakable hope and joy of the glory to come. 

Their voices rose, declaring, “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!” And you could feel it — the victory being sung into the very marrow of the moment. Hands lifted, tears brimmed, and hearts swelled with the beauty of imagining that day when the struggles of this world will cease, and we will see Jesus face to face.

Others roll dice over board games or cheer for their favorite teams on TV, their living rooms echoing with shouts and laughter. But in a log home in Libby, Montana, one family does something altogether different. They gather to sing hymns. This large family’s soul-stirring performance of ‘In The Sweet By and By’ will have you humming to yourself the rest of the day. 

In a world that moves fast and fragments easily, this family found a way to hold tight to what matters most—being together and worshiping the Lord. Their rendition is the sound of hearts intertwined, honoring their Amish mother, Orpha in the most tender way. In that moment, the living room becomes a sanctuary with more than two dozen gathered around in a circle. Their voices sing in rounds, carrying love and faith to the rafters and beyond. 

The idea of singing together as a family never occurred to me. It’s one thing to sing together at church but it’s another new idea all together to sing in the cozy comfort of home. It’s a sweet way to honor their mother, who poured her heart and soul into their lives. 

While some families share memories over board games, campfires, and remote controls, this family sings, weaving their lives together in harmony. It’s a practice steeped in faith, gratitude and the deep understanding that moments like these are sacred and fleeting. 

What a beautiful way to spend time together, lifting hymns that remind us of where we’re headed. In a world of distractions, this family reminds us of something unshakable: the joy of gathering, singing, and pointing one another heavenward.

Human beings have the ability to screw things up royally. We can take any and every situation and make a mess of it. We’re weak and imperfect and, as the Bible says, sinners who have all fallen short of the glory of God.

Because of sin, people continually get themselves into horrible situations. But instead of turning to God, most people will continue digging, getting themselves deeper and deeper into sin. It can get so bad that the circumstances appear rather bleak and hopeless. Thankfully, there is One who has already defeated sin and death and who interjects hope into seemingly hopeless situations.

TobyMac sings about these times when there is no way forward; there is no hope. But somehow, we made it through, surviving a situation and circumstances that can have no other explanation than God’s loving, guiding and protecting hand was involved.
