The holiday season is here! Although this is a wonderful time of year, it can also be super stressful. It’s easy to get burned out during the holidays if you’re not careful, since there’s so much to do: shopping, cooking, baking, decorating, volunteering for church and charities, attending Christmas events like concerts with your family, and more. In addition to the time pressures, you may also be dealing with family conflicts and financial pressures. Sometimes, the peace, patience, and joy God wants you to have slip away in the whirlwind of activities.

This season, God invites you to lean on him, especially when you feel the most overwhelmed. God is the source of all the peace, patience, and joy you need. The more you rely on God to help you during the holidays, the more you can experience a peaceful and joyful Christmas season.

Here are six simple yet powerful prayers – two for peace, two for patience, and two for joy – that you can use to invite God’s presence into your busy schedule and experience the beautiful rest God offers you.

Prayers for Peace

No matter what pressures you’re facing this holiday season, you can find peace of mind from God. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and he will give you peace anytime, and anywhere you pray for it – even as you’re dealing with a challenge like running late or trying to resolve an argument between your children. You can always rely on God to give you peace, because he serves personally as the peace you need. Ephesians 2:14 states about God: “He Himself is our peace.”

A prayer for peace in the middle of chaos: Dear God, I’m feeling a little frazzled right now. My to-do list seems endless, the noise level in my house is high, and I think the pressure of the holidays is stressing me out. I confess that I’ve been trying to control too much, and I’ve allowed the chaos around me to create chaos within me. Please help me remember that you’re my source of peace. Please give me your peace – the peace that’s so strong it goes beyond understanding – to guard my heart and my mind. Help me let go of worrying by praying about all my concerns one by one, and truly trusting you to help me with each of those situations. Remind me that the most important thing I can do this holiday season is to rest in your presence. Thank you for being with me constantly. Help me to slow down and notice your presence and appreciate your blessings in my life right now, instead of rushing around trying to do more. I surrender my schedule, my expectations, and my worries to you, my loving Father. I trust that you’ll give me the time and strength I need to do whatever you genuinely want me to do this Christmas season. Thank you for your perfect peace. Thank you, God. Amen.

A prayer for peace from perfectionism: Dear God, the holidays always bring out the inner perfectionist in me. I start comparing my house, my talents, my family, and other aspects of my life to what I see in other people’s lives, or sometimes to an unrealistic standard of having a magical Christmas throughout the entire holiday season. Honestly, I worry that I’m not doing enough to create the “perfect” Christmas memory for my children. Lord, I need your truth to silence the voice of comparison and criticism. Please show me the difference between simply celebrating this season and desperately trying to perform for it. Help me let go of the need for everything to be Pinterest-perfect, and instead, embrace the beauty of imperfect, messy, real life. My family doesn't need a flawless mom; they need a mom who is present, loving, and pointing them toward you. Give me the courage to say "no" to things that drain my time and energy but don't ultimately matter. Release me from the heavy burden of my own expectations. I pray that my holiday efforts would be motivated by love for you and love for my family, not by a desire for approval or a fear of failure. Thank you for loving me exactly as I am and helping me extend that grace and peace to myself today. Thank you, God. Amen.

Prayers for Patience

As a busy mom, you can often have your patience tested – especially during the holidays when you’re rushed, stressed, and tired. You probably face a lot of waiting this holiday season, from long checkout lines at stores to dealing with lots of cooking and baking, and waiting for the food to be ready. You will also likely need patience to deal with stressful situations, such as relationship conflicts during family gatherings. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), so the Holy Spirit will help you develop it. Isaiah 30:18 also encourages you that God will help you when you’re trying to be patient, and that you’ll be blessed when you wait for God: “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore, he will rise to show you compassion, for the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed is all who wait for him!”

A Prayer for Patience in Relationships: Dear God, I confess that I’ve been impatient lately. The stress of this season is making me react rather than respond to my children, my spouse, and others around me. Please forgive me for the sharp words I’ve said and the frustration I’m feeling with having to wait for things. Please renew my mind and refresh my spirit. Fill me with your love so that I can interact with my family and friends with the same patience you constantly show toward me. When one of my children is having a meltdown, please help me respond patiently instead of getting upset. When my spouse is distracted or unhelpful, please remind me to patiently seek to understand, rather than becoming defensive or angry. Please help me to be slow to anger and to choose kindness. Remind me that the people I’m with are much more important than the tasks I need to complete. May my home be a place of peace, not a place of conflict. Give me the patience to pause, pray, and breathe before I speak any word I might regret to my family and friends. Thank you for your perfect patience with me. Amen.

A prayer for patience with time and waiting: Dear God, I feel like I’m constantly racing against the clock. The days are flying by, and I have so much I want to accomplish this holiday season. I feel impatient with the pace of life, impatient with traffic, impatient with the long waits, and impatient when things don't go according to my carefully planned schedule. Please help me surrender my demand for immediate results and perfect timing. Teach me to be fully present in this moment, rather than mentally jumping ahead to the next one. Show me how to use the times I’m waiting for something – like car rides and time spent sitting with my children – as opportunities for reflection and connection, rather than just frustrating delays. Help me trust in your perfect timing. You’re never late. You have a purpose for every minute of this season, even the times that feel unproductive or frustrating to me. Please give me the wisdom to prioritize what truly matters and the patience to let go of the things that can wait or don’t need to be done at all. Please help me accept the way things are, not just the way I wish they were. Slow me down so I can experience your blessings in your perfect timing. Thank you, God. Amen.

Prayers for Joy

Joy is different from happiness. While you can only be happy in good circumstances, you can be joyful at any time, because joy comes from your relationship with God. You don’t have to try to force happiness throughout the holiday season. No matter what’s happening in your life, you can find joy through your relationship with Jesus. As Nehemiah 8:10 points out: “… the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

A prayer for joy in the simple things: Dear God, it’s so easy for me to get caught up in the significant, expensive, or elaborate parts of the holidays and miss your everyday miracles right in front of me. Please inspire me with awe throughout this holiday season. Please open my eyes to see your wonder in the significant yet straightforward experiences this season, such as the sparkle of Christmas lights and the sounds of my children singing Christmas carols. Please help me to savor my time with family and friends as much as possible. Protect me from comparison and consumerism that can steal my joy. I don't want to chase after things that don't satisfy. I want to enjoy my relationship with you, which is all I need to really be fulfilled. Thank you, God. Amen.

A prayer for joy and hope in the New Year season: Dear God, as the Christmas season comes to a close and the New Year begins, I confess that I sometimes feel a little nervous about what the coming year holds. Please help me let go of my worries by giving them to you in prayer. I need a fresh dose of your joy and hope. Please teach me how to change my focus from my temporary circumstances to look at you. Remind me that every single day of the coming year is in your hands. You want the best for me. Please help me walk into the New Year with courage, looking forward to what you’ll be doing in my life over the next year. Please give me goals and dreams that line up with your will, and a profound joy as I pursue them. May I point all the people I know to you this coming year so they, too, can find joy and hope. Thank you for the promise of a fresh start and a future filled with your goodness. Thank you, God. Amen.

In conclusion, you can find the peace, patience, and joy you need this holiday season, no matter how many challenges you’re facing right now. The holidays will still be a stressful time of year, but God will help you relieve stress and enjoy Christmas and the New Year if you stay connected to him through prayer. Remember that God doesn’t want you to get through the holidays merely; He wants you to experience His presence with you during the holidays. As you move forward in this holiday season, continue to pray, rest, and trust in the loving and powerful God who is with you through it all.
