Mudslides Trap Drivers, Bury Roads And Damage Homes In Southern California

Mudslides and debris flows knocked down trees, plowed into homes and trapped drivers for 10 hours after several Southern California communities were hit by heavy rain, authorities said. No one was hurt and authorities were able to get them out, and no one is reported missing, Christopher Prater, a public information officer for San Bernardino County Fire, said Friday. The mudslides late Thursday affected the tiny mountain communities of Forest Falls, Oak Glen and Potato Canyon in San Bernardino County, just east of Los Angeles, the county’s fire protection district said in a statement. Authorities rescued 10 people traveling in at least six vehicles who were stranded on state Route 38 in the area of Jenks Lake, near the San Bernardino National Forest, the fire district said. Kael Steel told KNBC-TV he was driving down the mountain from the community of Big Bear to head to an amusement park when the rain started pounding. “Suddenly we started seeing rocks and stuff coming down the side of the mountain,” he said. Steel said cars were turning around telling him the road was blocked. So he headed back up the mountain, but was blocked again. He turned around once more and said the road he had crossed 30 seconds earlier had been wiped away. “There's no road there anymore,” he said. The route was still closed as of Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol said. Damage teams planned to assess the hillside areas impacted by the slides. Officials could not immediately say how many homes were affected or the extent of the damage. “The community obviously has been impacted fairly significantly,” Prater said. “How bad, we don't know yet.”

RFK Jr.'s Advisory Panel Recommends New Restrictions On MMRV Vaccines

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine advisory committee is recommending new restrictions on the MMRV vaccine. The panel advises against giving the combination shot, which protects against chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella, before age 4. Instead, children should receive separate vaccines. Experts say the decision, made Thursday, raises concerns about public confidence and access to vaccines. The committee also discussed hepatitis B shots for newborns. The committee plans to address the hepatitis B shots and COVID-19 vaccine recommendations on Friday. CDC directors have almost always accepted the recommendations of the committee, which are widely heeded by doctors and guide vaccination programs.

Officers Respond To Anti-ICE Protest In Chicago Suburbs

Protesters tried to block vehicles Friday outside a federal immigration enforcement building in suburban Chicago, leading to a confrontation with authorities who used a chemical agent to disperse the crowd. Dozens of people carrying American flags and signs with the words “Hands off Chicago” were at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Broadview, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Chicago. Some protesters were taken into custody as white clouds from the chemical agent broke up the group, allowing vehicles to arrive and depart, according to video posted online by local TV crews. Andre Vasquez, a member of the Chicago City Council at the protest, described it as “tear gas, a little pepper spray, a little mix of both.” ICE launched a new operation this month with a focus on traffic stops in largely immigrant and Latino neighborhoods and Chicago suburbs. “They want us to be afraid,” Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, a Democrat, told reporters at the scene, referring to the crackdown. “They want us to just kind of go into our little corners and not do anything. ... We’re not going to let that happen.” Activists and local leaders lately have pledged to be defiant, trying to deter agents, warn residents and keep attention on a man killed by an immigration officer last week. Authorities said agents were pursuing a man with a history of reckless driving who had entered the country illegally. They said Silverio Villegas Gonzalez evaded arrest and dragged an officer with his vehicle. The government said the officer fired because he feared for his life.
