Measles Jumps Borders In North America With Outbreaks In Canada, Mexico And U.S.

North America’s three biggest measles outbreaks have grown to a total of more than 2,500 known cases. Three people have died in the U.S. and one in Mexico. Mexican and U.S. officials say the strains of measles spreading in Canada match the other large outbreaks. One official says the “virus was imported, traveling country to country.” Cities on the borders, like El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, are informally working together to stop the spread. A recent World Health Organization report said measles activity in the Americas region is 11 times as much as the same timeframe last year and that the risk level is “high” compared to the rest of the world’s “moderate” level.

Sexual Assault Reports In U.S. Military Fell Last Year By Nearly 4%

U.S. defense officials say the number of sexual assaults reported across the military fell by nearly 4% last year and there was a significant drop in the Army. It’s the second year in a row with a decrease. That reverses a troubling trend that’s plagued the Defense Department for more than a decade. The officials say that while the decline is a good sign, the numbers of reported assaults are still too high and the military needs to do more to get victims to report the often undisclosed crime. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the report hasn’t been publicly released.

2 Dead As Slow-Moving Storms Flood Roads Across Oklahoma And Texas

At least two people have died as slow-moving thunderstorms flooded roads across parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Authorities in Oklahoma say the two people died after their vehicles were caught in floodwaters. The National Weather Service says heavy rains and severe thunderstorms mean a heightened risk of flash flooding across the south-central U.S. through early Thursday. Residents in Pennsylvania and Ohio were picking up from another powerful storm that at its worst left more than half a million customers without power. Officials reported at least three deaths from Tuesday night’s storm in Pennsylvania.

Rubio Calls India And Pakistan In Effort To Defuse Crisis Over Kashmir Attack

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called senior officials in India and Pakistan in an effort to defuse the crisis that followed last week’s deadly attack in Kashmir, the State Department said. Rubio urged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to de-escalate tensions on Wednesday. India has vowed to punish Pakistan after accusing it of backing the attack, which Islamabad denies. The nuclear-armed rivals have since expelled each other’s diplomats and citizens, ordered the border shut and closed their airspace to each other. New Delhi has suspended a crucial water-sharing treaty with Islamabad.

Senate Votes Down Resolution To Block Trump's Global Tariffs

Senate Republicans have narrowly voted down a Democratic resolution that would have blocked global tariffs announced by Donald Trump earlier this month, giving the president a modest win Wednesday as lawmakers in both parties have remained skeptical of his trade agenda. Trump announced the far-reaching tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners April 2 and then reversed himself a few days later after a market meltdown, suspending the import taxes for 90 days. Amid the uncertainty for both U.S. consumers and businesses, the Commerce Department said Wednesday that the U.S. economy shrank 0.3% from January through March.

U.S. And Ukraine Sign Deal Giving U.S. Access To Country's Mineral Wealth

The U.S. and Ukraine have signed an agreement that will give the U.S. access to Ukraine's vast critical mineral resources. The deal on reconstruction and investment could enable continued military aid to Kyiv amid concerns that President Donald Trump might scale back support during ongoing peace talks with Russia. It comes after a weekslong press by Trump on Ukraine to compensate Washington for billions of dollars in military and economic assistance to help Ukraine repel the Russian invasion. Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. Treasury Scott Bessent said the “agreement signals clearly to Russia that the Trump administration is committed to a peace process centered on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine over the long term.”
