Suspect In Shooting At Dallas High School Is In Custody

The student accused of injuring four in a shooting at a Dallas high school was let into the building through an unsecured door and then walked down a hallway toward a group of students, opening fire on them before appearing to take a point-blank shot at one. That is according to an arrest warrant released Wednesday. The 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody several hours after the shooting, which happened just after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wilmer-Hutchins High School. The suspect was being held in Dallas County jail Wednesday on a charge of aggravated assault mass shooting.

Puerto Rico Hit With A Massive Power Outage

An island-wide blackout hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday as the largely Catholic residents of the U.S. territory prepared to celebrate the Easter weekend, a power company spokesman said. All 1.4 million clients on the island were without power, Hugo Sorrentini, spokesman for Luma Energy, which oversees the transmission and distribution of power, told The Associated Press. “The entire island is without generation,” he said. It was not immediately clear what caused the shutdown, the latest in a string of major blackouts on the island in recent years. Gov. Jenniffer González, who was traveling, said officials were “working diligently” to address the outage. Dozens of people were forced to walk next to the rails of the rapid transit system that serves the capital, San Juan, while scores of businesses including the biggest mall in the Caribbean were forced to close. Professional baseball and basketball games were cancelled as the hum of generators and smell of smoke filled the air. The last island-wide blackout occurred on New Year’s Eve. Puerto Rico has struggled with chronic outages since September 2017 when Hurricane Maria pummeled the island as a powerful Category 4 storm, razing a power grid that crews are still struggling to rebuild. The grid already had been deteriorating as a result of decades of a lack of maintenance and investment.

UK's Top Court Says Legal Definition Of Woman Refers To Biological Sex

Britain's highest court ruled on Wednesday that only biological and not trans women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws, a landmark decision greeted with concern by trans supporters but welcomed by the government as bringing clarity. The much anticipated ruling centred on whether a trans woman with a gender recognition certificate (GRC), a formal document giving legal recognition of someone's new gender, is protected from discrimination as a woman under Britain's Equality Act. The decision confirms that single-sex services for women such as refuges, hospital wards and sports can exclude trans women, clearing up legal ambiguity. Transgender campaigners said the decision could lead to discrimination, especially over employment issues. "The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms 'women' and 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex," Deputy President of the Supreme Court Patrick Hodge said. "But we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph for one or more groups in our society at the expense of another - it is not." Transgender rights have become a highly political issue in Britain and other parts of the world. Some critics say the conservative right has weaponised identity politics to attack minority groups, while others argue that liberal support for transgender people has infringed on the rights of biological women. In the United States, legal challenges are underway after President Donald Trump issued executive orders that include barring transgender people from military service.

China Orders Airlines To Suspend Boeing Jet Deliveries Amid Trade War

China has ordered its airlines not to take any further deliveries of Boeing BA.N jets in response to the U.S. decision to impose 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday (April 15), citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of Boeing — which looks at China as one of its biggest growth markets and where rival Airbus AIR.PA holds a dominant position — were down 2% in early trading. China's top three airlines - Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines - had planned to take delivery of Boeing planes, respectively, between 2025 and 2027. Beijing has also asked that Chinese carriers halt purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from U.S. companies, the Bloomberg report said. China's move to halt purchases of aircraft-related components is expected to raise maintenance costs for the jets flying in the country. Beijing's action also follows its decision last week to hike levies on U.S. imports to 125% in retaliation against U.S. tariffs, which would significantly raise the cost of Boeing jets bound for Chinese carriers.

Judge Finds Probable Cause To Hold Trump Administration In Contempt For Violating Deportation Order

A federal judge says he's found probable cause to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt of court for violating his orders to turn around planes carrying deportees to El Salvador. U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg said Wedneday that the administration must try to “purge” itself of a contempt finding or he'll launch hearings and potentially refer the matter for prosecution. The move by Boasberg marks an escalation in a battle between the judicial and executives branches of government over a president’s powers to carry out key White House priorities.
