Knicks Fans Flood New York For Championship Parade

NEW YORK, June 18 (Reuters) - Delirious New York Knicks fans flooded the streets of Lower Manhattan on Thursday for a ticker-tape parade celebrating the newly crowned NBA champions, capping a dream season more than five decades after the team last won a title. The stretch of Broadway known as the "Canyon of Heroes" was a sea of orange and blue, as throngs of people gathered in the pre-dawn hours — with some camping out overnight — to secure a spot behind police barricades for what Mayor Zohran Mamdani said could be the largest parade in the city's history. The Knicks' dominant run through the NBA playoffs electrified this sports-mad city that had grown used to falling short year after year. The team's 15-3 playoff record featured a number of improbable comebacks, culminating with Saturday's victory in Game 5 of the NBA Finals over the San Antonio Spurs that ended its 53-year title drought. Trip Kesler, a Long Island native who lives in Florida, flew to Virginia to meet her brother before they drove north for the parade. The two secured a prime spot along the parade route after waking up at 3 a.m. "We love our team," the 35-year-old Kesler said, wearing an orange-and-blue Knicks hat that her 64-year-old mother knitted for the occasion. Her dad told her mother every year for decades that the Knicks would win, she added. "And we did it this year," she said. "I was locked in since Game One of the finals. I knew who was gonna win." The viewing pens were already full three hours before the parade kicked off, the New York police department said. Knicks players basked in the crowd's adulation as the parade set off from the southern tip of Manhattan at 10:32 a.m. EDT (1432 GMT) for the 2/3-mile (1.1 km) route to City Hall, where the team will receive symbolic keys to the city from Mamdani. Karl-Anthony Towns, wearing a backwards Knicks hat and smoking a cigar, danced to the music with Mamdani on one float, while backup center Mitchell Robinson rode in one of his custom trucks. At one point, NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Jalen Brunson stepped off his float and walked along the street carrying the golden Larry O'Brien championship trophy as fans screamed his name. Knicks stars of yesteryear joined the parade, including Walt "Clyde" Frazier, who helped lead the franchise to its two previous titles in 1970 and 1973, and Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing. So too did celebrity fans, including movie director Spike Lee — a courtside presence at Madison Square Garden for decades — actor Timothee Chalamet, and lifestyle guru Martha Stewart. Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys will serenade the revelers. Viral videos following the team's 94-90 clinching victory on Saturday showed hundreds of fans celebrating on the streets singing the 2009 hit "Empire State of Mind," an unofficial city anthem Keys recorded with a fellow New Yorker, rapper Jay-Z. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who estimated the crowd could number in the millions, ordered the deployment of 10,000 officers to the parade route, after Saturday's victory sparked sometimes chaotic celebrations in the streets across the city's five boroughs. Mamdani ordered municipal buildings illuminated in the team's orange-and-blue colors for the parade, mirroring numerous landmarks on the city's skyline, which were lit up in Knicks colors throughout the playoffs. New York's tradition of ticker-tape parades began spontaneously when the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in 1886 and office workers celebrated by throwing stock ticker tape used to print financial data out of their windows. When ticker tape became obsolete, it was replaced by confetti. The Downtown Alliance, a nonprofit focused on improving Lower Manhattan, has delivered 2,500 pounds (1,134 kg) of shredded paper to 22 buildings along the route.

Teen Dies After Being Thrown From Runaway Horse-Drawn Carriage In Central Park

An 18-year-old passenger has died after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage that went out of control in New York City's Central Park. According to police, the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon when a carriage horse suddenly bolted while the driver was outside the carriage. The teen was riding with three other passengers when the horse took off, sending at least two people from the moving carriage. Video captured the horse racing through the park while pulling the carriage before it collided with another carriage and overturned. The teenager was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The other passengers declined medical treatment. A representative for the Transport Workers Union, which represents carriage drivers, said the driver had stepped away from the carriage to take a photograph of passengers, an action that is against industry rules. The horse involved had reportedly been working in Central Park for only six weeks. The tragedy has intensified debate over New York City's horse-drawn carriage industry, a long-standing tourist attraction that has faced increasing scrutiny from animal welfare advocates and safety activists. The incident comes just days after a separate horse-related incident in the park involving the fatal collapse of a carriage horse. The Central Park Conservancy renewed its call for a ban on horse-drawn carriages following the crash, arguing that the risks to both people and animals are too great. Officials have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Hegseth Announces Review Of U.S. Troops in Europe, Presses NATO Allies To Do More

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is calling on NATO allies to take greater responsibility for their own security, announcing a six-month Pentagon review of U.S. military forces stationed across Europe. Speaking to defense officials in Brussels on Thursday, Hegseth said the review will examine America's military footprint on the continent and assess whether NATO members are doing enough to lead their own defense efforts. Hegseth also criticized some European allies for refusing to grant U.S. forces access to military bases during recent operations targeting Iran. He described those decisions as "shameful" and argued they highlighted the need for a stronger and more self-reliant alliance. The defense secretary called for what he described as a “NATO 3.0,” envisioning an alliance that remains united but places greater responsibility on European nations to provide for their own security. The announcement comes as the United States plans to significantly increase defense spending over the next several years, with administration officials emphasizing a focus on protecting American interests while maintaining support for NATO and its collective defense mission. The Pentagon review is expected to conclude later this year and could influence future decisions regarding U.S. troop levels and military resources in Europe.

Pastors for Trump Founder Suspends Congressional Campaign After Texting Controversy

Oklahoma megachurch pastor and Pastors for Trump founder Jackson Lahmeyer has suspended his campaign for Congress just one day after advancing to a Republican runoff election. Lahmeyer announced the decision Wednesday, saying he reached it after "prayerful consideration" with his wife and campaign team. In a statement, he said he did not want to become a distraction to his family, church, or the voters of Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District. The move follows reports that Lahmeyer exchanged romantic text messages with a woman who was not his wife. According to multiple media reports, the messages were sent to a fundraiser who worked on his congressional campaign. Lahmeyer reportedly acknowledged crossing a boundary through text messaging and said the matter had been addressed privately. His withdrawal came shortly after President Donald Trump endorsed Lahmeyer’s runoff opponent, Oklahoma State Representative Mark Tedford. Trump had previously backed Lahmeyer and praised his role in founding Pastors for Trump, a coalition of faith leaders that supported Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. With Lahmeyer out of the race, Tedford is now expected to move forward as the Republican nominee in the contest for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District seat.

Trump Sees Mixed Results In Georgia Runoff Elections

Georgia Republicans delivered a mixed outcome for President Donald Trump in Tuesday’s runoff elections, backing his preferred candidate in the U.S. Senate race while rejecting his choice for governor. In the Senate contest, Congressman Mike Collins secured the Republican nomination, defeating former football coach Derek Dooley. Collins will now face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. Ossoff is the only Democratic U.S. senator seeking reelection this cycle in a state won by Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The governor’s race produced a different result. Republican voters chose healthcare entrepreneur Rick Jackson over Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who had Trump's endorsement. Jackson, a billionaire businessman making his first run for statewide office, spent heavily from his personal fortune during the campaign. Jackson will face Democratic nominee and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in what is expected to be one of the state's most closely watched races this fall. The results underscore Trump's continued influence within the Republican Party while also showing that endorsements do not always guarantee victory, particularly in competitive statewide contests.

Families of Children With Disabilities Concerned Over Federal Education Oversight Changes

Parents of children with disabilities are expressing concern after the Trump administration announced major changes to how the federal government handles education-related civil rights complaints and special education programs. Under the plan, the U.S. Department of Justice will assume responsibility for enforcing civil rights protections in schools, while the Department of Health and Human Services will oversee special education programs previously managed by the Department of Education. Advocates say the changes come at a time when many families are already facing long delays in resolving complaints involving discrimination, bullying, and access to educational services. Some disability rights groups argue that special education should remain under an education-focused agency rather than a health department. The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has historically served as a last resort for families seeking federal intervention. However, critics note that a growing backlog of cases has already slowed the complaint process. Supporters of the administration's plan say the reorganization could improve efficiency and better align federal resources. But many parents and advocacy organizations worry the transition could create additional confusion and delays for students who rely on federal protections and services.

Bystanders Praised for Heroic Rescue Efforts After Deadly Texas Plane Crash

Several Good Samaritans are being praised for risking their own safety to help passengers escape a fiery plane crash on a Texas highway. Among those who rushed to the scene was 23-year-old tow truck driver Ivan Franco, who said he feared the aircraft could explode at any moment. Despite the danger, Franco and other bystanders worked alongside police officers to rescue survivors trapped inside the wreckage. Witnesses used tools, including a sledgehammer and a shovel, in attempts to reach the occupants. Authorities say officers and civilians eventually lifted the aircraft’s door, allowing three passengers and two pilots to escape. The crash occurred after the business jet experienced mechanical problems and attempted an emergency landing. One person was killed in the accident: Joshua Baer, a prominent Texas entrepreneur and technology investor known for supporting startup companies through his Austin-based venture capital firm. Investigators continue to examine what caused the aircraft to go down. Meanwhile, those involved in the rescue are being recognized for their quick actions, which officials say likely saved lives.
