New York City is preparing to host a nationwide Independence Day celebration this year as America250 and One Times Square announce a new broadcast event called the “Giving 4th.” Organizers say the celebration will transform the iconic Times Square Ball Drop into a coast-to-coast countdown experience ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. For the first time, the Times Square Ball will drop eight separate times, marking midnight across every U.S. time zone — from Guam to New York and through the continental United States to American Samoa. The event begins July 3rd with live performances and a rolling countdown across time zones, culminating in a New York City midnight moment before continuing westward through the night. Officials say the goal is to unite the country in a shared national celebration leading into Independence Day events nationwide. As part of the initiative, July 4th will feature “America’s Block Party in the Sky” at One Times Square, along with public events and a national charitable giving campaign focused on service and donations. On July 5th, a “Day of Reflection” will encourage Americans to engage with the Declaration of Independence and share messages of remembrance and gratitude. Organizers say the multi-day event blends entertainment, reflection, and community service ahead of the nation’s semiquincentennial. Separately, Coca-Cola is launching a yearlong America250 campaign featuring commemorative packaging, including limited-edition bottles and collectible mini-cans representing all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. The company says the initiative will also include volunteer efforts, public art installations, and community programs focused on service and local storytelling throughout 2026.

The remark in question, in which Kimmel said Melania Trump had “a glow like an expectant widow,” sparked backlash from the president and first lady, who condemned the joke as “corrosive” and “beyond the pale.” The dispute comes days after a violent incident at a Washington, D.C., event where President Trump and guests were evacuated following a shooting in the lobby of the Washington Hilton. Authorities say the suspect, Cole Allen, breached a security checkpoint, fired at Secret Service agents, wounded one, and was later arrested. President Trump and the first lady are both calling for ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. The first family is upset with Kimmel after a joke last week described the first lady as having “the glow of an expectant widow.” Kimmel’s comedy routine was delivered two nights before an armed man tried to enter a hotel ballroom dinner attended by the president, first lady, and vice president. Melania Trump wrote online that “people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.” And the president posted a message saying Kimmel “should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”

64 Million In Midwest At Risk Of Severe Storms

Authorities say fast-moving storms pummeled parts of the Midwest with hail, strong wind and heavy rain, flooding streets and leading to stranded commuters who needed to be rescued from their vehicles. More storms are on the way through Monday night. The National Weather Service forecasts show more than 64 million people in the Midwest mostly are at risk of severe storms, with the St. Louis region at moderate risk for multiple strong tornadoes and large hail. In Kansas City, Missouri, the local fire department responded to 11 water rescues Monday morning following heavy rain.

"Friendly Federal Assassin" Remains Behind Bars

The man accused of opening fire at a Washington dinner attended by Donald Trump was charged on Monday with attempting to assassinate the U.S. president. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, could face a potential life sentence if convicted. Allen wore a blue jail-issue V-neck shirt and pants at his first appearance in Washington federal court, two days after authorities said they foiled an attack at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, an annual black-tie gathering of journalists and politicians. Allen's hands were cuffed behind his back as U.S. Marshals led him into and out of the courtroom. At the hearing, prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine said the weapons Allen brought to Washington included a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and three knives. "He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump," Ballantine said. Allen also faces charges of illegally transporting a firearm across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh said at a court hearing. Allen did not respond to the allegations at the brief hearing. He said he had a master's degree in computer science. Defense lawyer Tezira Abe said at the hearing that Allen had no prior arrests or convictions. Sharbaugh ordered Allen held in custody until at least Thursday, when he scheduled a separate court hearing to consider prosecutors' request that he be detained pending trial. The incident was another reminder of a rising tide of political violence in the United States in recent years. Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was shot dead at a rally last September, months after the June 2025 slaying of Democratic Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. "Violence has no place in civil life," acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters after the hearing. "It cannot and will not be used to disrupt democratic institutions, and it certainly cannot continue to be used against the president of the United States." Trump faced two previous attempts on his life during the 2024 presidential campaign. Jeanine Pirro, the top federal prosecutor in Washington, told reporters that additional charges would be brought against Allen. Allen booked a room at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner took place, on April 6 and traveled from California to Washington by train last week, according to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent in court. According to the affidavit, Allen on Saturday sent an email to family members referring to himself as the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and discussing plans to target senior Trump administration officials. The shooting on Saturday rattled the press dinner, a prominent event on Washington's social calendar, sending attendees diving under tables and prompting law enforcement to whisk senior officials out of the room. Trump, who was set to deliver remarks later in the evening, was rushed off the stage by security personnel after shots were fired. U.S. officials have touted his takedown as a law enforcement success. But the incident has revived concerns about the safety of Trump, who survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign, and other U.S. officials. Allen ran through a magnetometer at a security checkpoint at the hotel while holding a long gun, according to the affidavit. A Secret Service officer fired at Allen, who fell to the ground but was not shot, the affidavit read. The affidavit said the Secret Service officer was shot in the chest while wearing a ballistic vest, but did not specify by whom. Allen, who according to the affidavit was armed with a shotgun and a pistol, was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries following the shooting.
