Republican Senator Ted Cruz is advocating for new restrictions on military flights to prevent another deadly midair collision, as Congress nears a government funding deadline next month. FDA Criticizes Retailers For Slow Response To Baby Formula Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is criticizing some of the country’s largest retailers for failing to promptly remove contaminated baby formula from their shelves. Walmart, Target, Kroger, and Albertsons continued to sell ByHeart infant formula for days or even weeks after a November 11 recall, federal officials say. The recalled formula has been linked to an outbreak of infant botulism that has sickened more than 50 babies across 19 states. All of the affected infants required hospitalization and treatment, according to the FDA. The agency says it sent warning letters to the retailers, urging them to act quickly to protect public health and prevent further cases. Officials are reminding consumers to check for recalled formula and avoid feeding it to infants.

Trump sues BBC for $10 billion over Jan. 6 documentary

President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC, accusing the British broadcaster of defamation and unfair business practices. The suit claims the BBC misrepresented Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech in a documentary that aired ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The lawsuit seeks $5 billion in damages for defamation and $5 billion for alleged deceptive trade practices. Trump argues the documentary spliced together portions of his speech to falsely make it appear he urged supporters to march and “fight like hell,” while omitting sections where he called for peaceful demonstrations. The BBC apologized for what it called an “error of judgment,” but rejected claims of defamation. Trump has said the network “put terrible words in [his] mouth” and is seeking legal redress in a U.S. court after deadlines to sue in Britain expired.

Search For Brown University Shooter Resumes

Authorities are again searching for the person seen in grainy video walking away from the Brown University shooting that killed two students and injured nine. Officials said late Sunday that they released a person of interest they had detained earlier in the day, finding no reason to keep him in custody. This setback left law enforcement without a known suspect. The shooting happened Saturday during a busy time on campus, causing chaos and a lockdown. The gunman fired more than 40 rounds inside a classroom. The victims included a sophomore who was vice president of the Brown College Republicans and a freshman whose family immigrated to the U.S. from Uzbekistan.

JetBlue Flight Averts Collision With U.S. Air Force Jet Near Venezuela

A JetBlue passenger jet bound for New York took evasive action on Friday to avoid a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force plane near Venezuela, a pilot said in an air traffic control recording. JetBlue Flight 1112 had departed the Caribbean nation of Curaçao and was flying about 40 miles (64 km) off the coast of Venezuela when the Airbus A320 reported encountering the Air Force jet, which did not have its transponder activated, according to the recording captured by liveatc.net. The Air Force pilot was within a few miles of the plane and at the same altitude, the JetBlue pilot said on the recording. “They passed directly in our flight path… They don’t have their transponder turned on. It’s outrageous,” the pilot said. The Air Force jet then entered Venezuelan airspace, the JetBlue pilot said. “We almost had a mid-air collision up here.” A JetBlue spokesperson said on Monday the company’s top priority is safety. “Our crew members are trained on proper procedures for various flight situations, and we appreciate our crew for promptly reporting this situation to our leadership team. We have reported this incident to federal authorities and will participate in any investigation.” The incident happened as the United States has mounted a large-scale military buildup in the southern Caribbean as President Donald Trump campaigns to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, pushing relations to their most volatile point in years. U.S. Southern Command said in a statement Monday that it is aware of the incident and reviewing the matter. The military added its “aircrews are highly trained professionals who operate in accordance with established procedures and applicable airspace requirements. Safety remains a top priority, and we are working through the appropriate channels to assess the facts surrounding the situation.” Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration warned major airlines of a “potentially hazardous situation” when flying over Venezuela and urged them to exercise caution. Major airlines from around the world have halted flights as tensions have worsened and Trump has threatened to begin hitting land targets in Venezuela. The FAA did not immediately comment Monday on the JetBlue incident.

Iowa National Guard Members Killed In Weekend Attack In Syria

The two Iowa National Guard members killed in a weekend attack in Syria that the U.S. military blamed on the Islamic State group were identified Monday and remembered as dedicated soldiers. The U.S. Army named them as Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff in their honor, saying that, “We are grateful for their service and deeply mourn their loss.” The Pentagon’s chief spokesman, Sean Parnell, has said a U.S. civilian working as an interpreter also was killed. Three other Guard members were wounded in the attack, the Iowa National Guard said Monday, with two of them in stable condition and the other in good condition. The attack was a major test for the rapprochement between the United States and Syria since the ouster of autocratic leader Bashar Assad a year ago, coming as the U.S. military is expanding its cooperation with Syrian security forces. Hundreds of American troops are deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting IS.

Prosecutors played audio recordings to show jurors that a Wisconsin judge knew what was at stake when she directed an immigrant to a private door while federal agents were in the courthouse to arrest him. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan's trial on charges of obstruction and concealment began Monday. There is no dispute that Dugan directed Eduardo Flores-Ruiz to leave her courtroom through a private door after telling immigration agents to speak with the chief judge. Flores-Ruiz was later arrested outside the courthouse and deported. The government’s case is expected to run through at least Thursday.

Brian Walshe Found Guilty Of Murdering His Wife

A Massachusetts man has been found guilty of murdering his wife, who has never been found after she disappeared nearly three years ago. Brian Walshe was convicted of first-degree murder Monday after pleading guilty last month to lesser charges of misleading police and illegally disposing of her body. She had taken out a $2.7 million life insurance policy naming him as the beneficiary.
