Father Sentenced After Giving Son Gun He Used In School Shooting

A man who gave his son the gun he used in a deadly high school shooting in Georgia has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Colin Gray was convicted of charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter after his then 14-year-old son, Colt Gray, used the weapon to kill two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in September 2024. Colt Gray was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors say Colin Gray gave his son the rifle as a Christmas gift. The elder Gray is among a handful of American parents who have been charged after their children were accused in shootings.

Lawmakers Demand Answers From Fauci

Kentucky Senator Republican Rand Paul is refusing to let former NIH Director Anthony Fauci off the hook for refusing to answer questions before the Homeland Security Committee. Paul warned that Dr. Fauci's pardon from Joe Biden's auto-pen will not save him from prosecution for "obstructing Congress." Fauci giving an opening statement and then refusing to answer one question invoking the 5th Amendment more than 100 times. The pardon from the former President came on his last hours in office and excuses potential illegal acts committed by Dr. Fauci dating back to January 1st of 2014 through January 19th of 2025.

Trump-Branded Commemorative Passports Will Become Available Across U.S. In August

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans outside the nation's capital will soon be able to get limited-edition U.S. passports that feature a picture of President Donald Trump and celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the State Department said Thursday. The department’s 27 passport agencies nationwide will start offering the special travel documents next month. They previously had only been available at the Washington, D.C., passport office for in-person applicants. Trump, whose stern portrait is emblazoned on an inside page, is the first living president featured in the travel document. The passports are the latest instance of Trump having his name and likeness added to buildings, documents and other highly visible tributes. His image is on a gold-finished commemorative coin celebrating the country’s founding that the U.S. Mint has begun producing, and there are efforts to put Trump’s signature on all new U.S. paper currency, also a first for a sitting president. “In response to overwhelming demand, the Department of State is making an additional 250,000 of the special commemorative passports available to the public,” it said in a statement. “Americans all across the country will now have the opportunity to apply for one of these additional special passports, known as the ‘Patriot Passport.’” Passport offices in Centennial, Colorado; Chicago; Dallas; Detroit; New Orleans; New York; and Stamford, Connecticut, will offer the Trump passports at one-day special events starting Aug. 8. The list will grow to include other passport offices throughout August. Those who want the special passport must apply in-person on the day specified on the department’s passport website. Those wanting a traditional passport must apply on different days. The commemorative passport features Trump’s picture over a gold imprimatur of his signature to an interior page, while the cover carries the words “United States of America” in bold gold print at the top and “Passport” at the bottom — a reversal of the current standard cover. In addition, a small gold laminate American flag, with the number 250 encircled by stars, is at the bottom of the back cover. The only presidents featured in current U.S. passports are in a double-page depiction of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Other depictions include the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and scenes of the Great Plains, mountains and islands. Current passports also contain quotations from Martin Luther King Jr. as well as Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Dwight Eisenhower. The addition of Trump’s picture and signature to the passport book is the newest step his aides have taken to increase the president’s visibility, including adding his name to the U.S. Institute of Peace building and the Kennedy Center performing arts venue, although that signage was later removed on a court order. Trump also has made waves with his plans for a new White House ballroom and a massive arch to be built at one of the entrances to Washington from Virginia.

DOJ’s Fraud Division Announces Unprecedented Fraud Enforcement Actions in Southeast

The Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division announced a series of significant fraud enforcement actions across the Southeastern United States, the product of robust federal-state partnerships with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The charges announced today encompass 17 cases spanning the seven states. These recent cases involve over $350 million in intended losses and include cases involving SNAP benefits, Small Business Administration loans, housing benefits, and tax fraud. From July 4 alone, federal prosecutors charged cases reaching over $90 million loss and implicating 12 named defendants. The Division separately announced the formation of federal-state anti-fraud task forces in North Carolina, Mississippi, and Florida. The Division additionally announced new federal-state cooperation agreements with this group of states to strengthen ongoing fraud enforcement efforts, following a recent roundtable that brought together 18 U.S. Attorneys Offices, seven State Attorneys General Offices, five federal law enforcement partners, and over 50 state officials. “Defeating the fraud epidemic in our country requires all-hands-on-deck from our federal and state partners nationwide,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. “Whether it’s sharing intelligence, data, personnel, or priorities, partnering with state agencies directly strengthens our ability to identify those stealing taxpayer dollars. When federal prosecutors work alongside state agencies to root out fraud, fraudsters lose and the American people win.” “Working alongside our federal and interstate partners, we are committed to combating fraud at every level. Our collaborative partnerships allowed us to uncover more than $20 million in Medicaid fraud claims during an operation known as Operation Border Wars,” said South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson. “My office also recently indicted six individuals accused of defrauding taxpayers and stealing jobs from hardworking South Carolinians by providing counterfeit employment documents to illegal aliens. The rule of law means something in South Carolina, and we will continue working with our law enforcement partners to dismantle these schemes and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.” “We appreciate the Trump Administration's commitment to rooting out fraud in government healthcare programs, including the creation of a dedicated state-federal partnership to lead this fight,” said Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. “Thanks to the Administration’s serious commitment to ending waste, fraud, and abuse, we now have the tools and coordination needed to identify bad actors and hold them accountable. At the same time, an already untenable diplomatic effort to end the war has faltered once again as mistrust deepens between the longtime adversaries. Despite several days of relative calm, both sides carried out military strikes in the last 24 hours that once again risk a return to all-out war — and further expansion in the region. Late Wednesday, the U.S. military said it had launched a “a powerful response" against Iran. Little is clear about what strategy, if any, American or Iranian officials have for a path forward.

CAIRO (AP) — The United States and Iran each fired barrages of missiles as the pattern of back-and-forth strikes took hold again and hope dimmed for a quick end to the five-month conflict. Following a few days of respite, fears of a wider war have grown, with renewed fighting threatening to engulf even more countries. Jordan said Thursday it intercepted Iranian missiles for the second consecutive day, while Kuwait said a strike in the northern part of the country killed one person. Also this week, drones caused fires on ships at an Egyptian port, and Saudi Arabia said it came under fire from Iran-backed militias in Iraq.

U.S. Senate Panel Advances Trump CDC Pick Schwartz

WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate health committee voted on Thursday to advance the nomination of President Donald Trump's pick for CDC director Dr. Erica Schwartz, handing his administration a rare win after repeated failed attempts to fill top health posts. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee sent Schwartz, Trump's third pick to run the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to the full Senate on a 13-10 vote, with Democratic Senator Tim Kaine the lone member to cross party lines. Trump withdrew his first CDC pick, Dave Weldon, and his first surgeon general nominee, Janette Nesheiwat, in 2025 before either reached a hearing. He withdrew a second surgeon general pick, Casey Means, in April when it became apparent she lacked enough votes. If confirmed, Schwartz would be the first permanent CDC director since Susan Monarez, Trump's second pick, was fired by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. last year after less than a month over a clash on vaccine policy. The upheaval extends across the Department of Health and Human Services. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary resigned in May, with no replacement nominated. The deputy health secretary's post has been vacant since Jim O'Neill left in February, and a dozen of the National Institutes of Health's 27 institutes and centers lack permanent directors. Schwartz is set to inherit an agency confronting the worst U.S. measles resurgence in three decades, driven by falling childhood immunization rates, an international Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, and the largest ?U.S. foodborne illness outbreak in recent years. Federal Reserve Holds Interest Rates Steady

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady Wednesday as policymakers continued to weigh persistent inflation against signs of continued economic growth. The central bank kept its target rate between 3.5% and 3.75%. The decision was approved by a 9-3 vote, with three policymakers favoring a quarter-point increase. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh described the disagreement as evidence of a healthy policymaking process, saying robust debate helps officials reach better decisions. “There was a large majority support for the decision that we made in the room,” Warsh said. Montana Hiker Makes Remarkable Self-Rescue After Fall

A Montana hiker is recovering after walking nearly 10 miles with a trekking pole lodged in his body following a freak accident on Granite Peak. David Cifaldi, a nurse, determined the pole had missed his vital organs and chose to hike out with two friends instead of waiting for a helicopter rescue. After a six-hour trek, he reached a hospital where doctors safely removed the pole. Cifaldi has since recovered and returned to work.
