Zelenskyy To Meet Trump Friday To Talk Air Defense, New Weapons

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that he would meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, where the two would discuss Ukraine's air defense and long-range strike capabilities. The two leaders spoke on both Saturday and Sunday amid intensifying discussions about the potential provision of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv, and a Ukrainian delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko is slated to visit Washington before the Friday meeting. Kyiv has been lobbying Washington to supply the U.S.-produced missiles, which have the capacity to hit Moscow, but which Ukrainians say would be used only on military targets. Moscow has said such a move would represent a serious escalation. Zelenskyy said he had given Trump, who has increasingly signaled frustration with Russia in recent weeks, an idea of how many of the coveted Tomahawks Ukraine needs. "Frankly, I've already shared our vision with Trump... but some of these things are not for a phone conversation, so we'll meet," he told reporters in Kyiv.

Trump: 'We Have Peace In The Middle East'

U.S. President Donald Trump declared “we have peace in the Middle East” during the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt on Monday, Oct. 13, as leaders gathered to mark the formal end of the Gaza war. "Nobody thought this could happen", he said, adding "together we have achieved what everybody said impossible." He stated that the cease-fire in Gaza will continue, calling the day “an incredible one not only for the Middle East but for the entire world.” US President Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have co-chaired the summit, attended by leaders of more than 20 countries, to solidify the ceasefire and advance post-war reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The summit comes after the Palestinian group Hamas released 20 living Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 prisoners under the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire plan. Last week, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a plan he laid out Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. The first phase of the deal came into force on Friday. Phase two of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas’ participation, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of Hamas. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 67,800 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it largely uninhabitable.
