Oil Prices Rise To Six-Week High As Iran Conflict Threatens Supply Routes

Oil prices climbed to a nearly six-week high Wednesday as escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran raised concerns about disruptions to major Middle Eastern energy routes. Brent crude briefly surpassed $95 a barrel as traders reacted to continued attacks and growing threats to commercial shipping. The international benchmark later settled above $94, gaining more than 3% for the day. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude also rose more than 3%, settling near $87 a barrel. The increase came amid concerns about tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil-shipping passages. Threats against vessels in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen added to fears that supplies from the region could be disrupted. Oil prices have now risen for several consecutive sessions as diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have shown little progress. Continued increases could raise gasoline and transportation costs while adding to inflationary pressure worldwide.

Minnesota Lawmaker’s Killer Faces Two Life Sentences

Vance Boelter is set to be sentenced in federal court Thursday after pleading guilty to killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and critically wounding another state lawmaker and his wife. Boelter admitted that he disguised himself as a police officer and carried out the coordinated attacks at the lawmakers’ homes on June 14, 2025. State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, survived after suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds. Authorities said Boelter spent months planning the attacks and stalking political figures. Investigators also found a list containing the names of other public officials who may have been potential targets. Boelter pleaded guilty to six federal charges, including murder, stalking and firearms offenses, under an agreement that removed the possibility of the death penalty. He faces two consecutive life sentences plus an additional 40 years in prison. The shootings sparked the largest manhunt in Minnesota history and renewed national concerns about politically motivated violence. Boelter also continues to face state charges connected to the attacks.

Officer Fatally Shoots Man After Being Stabbed

A fatal police shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, is under investigation after an officer shot and killed a man authorities say stabbed the officer while resisting arrest. According to Madison police, officers responded to reports of a man attempting to enter parked vehicles when they confronted the suspect. During the encounter, investigators say the suspect stabbed one of the officers, prompting another officer to open fire. The suspect died at the scene, while the injured officer was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The shooting prompted demonstrations Tuesday evening, with protesters marching through downtown Madison to the Wisconsin State Capitol and calling for greater police accountability. The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in the state. Officials have not yet released the names of the officer or the man who was killed. The investigation remains ongoing.

U.S., Saudi Arabia Sign Landmark Civil Nuclear Agreement

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement that could eventually allow the kingdom to enrich uranium as it develops a domestic nuclear energy industry. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed the 30-year agreement Wednesday. The pact creates the legal framework needed for American companies to help Saudi Arabia build nuclear reactors and other civilian nuclear infrastructure. The framework calls for the two countries to conduct a joint study before any uranium enrichment facility is constructed. Supporters say the partnership could create business opportunities for U.S. nuclear companies, including Westinghouse, while helping Saudi Arabia diversify its energy supply and preserve more oil for export. However, the agreement has already raised concerns among lawmakers and nuclear nonproliferation experts. Unlike a previous U.S. nuclear deal with the United Arab Emirates, the Saudi agreement does not prohibit domestic uranium enrichment or require the kingdom to accept the International Atomic Energy Agency’s most rigorous inspection framework. The agreement will now be submitted to Congress for review. Lawmakers could attempt to block it, although overturning a presidential veto would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

House Approves $95 Billion Funding Package

FBI Chief Holds Talks In Cambodia Over Closer Security Cooperation To Combat Online Scam Crimes

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — FBI Director Kash Patel held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Wednesday on joint efforts to combat international online scam operations that cheat victims out of billions of dollars each year. A report issued Tuesday by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime estimated that scams caused estimated losses in the Asia-Pacific region alone of as much as $114 billion in 2025. It warned that even as authorities conduct raids on industrial-sized scam centers mostly located in border regions of Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, criminals have responded by shifting to other parts of the world or operating on a smaller scale. Patel arrived in Cambodia from neighboring Thailand which co-hosted a two-day summit with the U.S. this week on scam centers that was attended by representatives of nearly 20 countries and hundreds of law enforcement officials. The head of the top U.S. law enforcement agency met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for talks on joint cooperation to tackle scam centers and other transnational crimes, such as human trafficking and drug trafficking, particularly through information sharing and intelligence exchanges. Cybercrime has flourished in Southeast Asia where law enforcement is weak, particularly in Cambodia and Myanmar. Scam centers are also linked to human trafficking. Thousands of foreign nationals who are employed to run “romance” and cryptocurrency scams to swindle victims are often recruited with false job offers and then forced to work in conditions of near-slavery. Cambodia this year claims to have accelerated a crackdown on the scam operations, whose proliferation there is “a top priority for the U.S. government,” according a U.S. Embassy statement. Washington appreciates Hun Manet’s pledge to counter this problem and is coordinating closely with the Cambodian government to battle the problem, it said. The embassy said Patel’s visit “reinforces the need for strong, joint efforts to combat transnational cybercrime, including increased efforts to hold high-level scam bosses accountable and for improved information sharing regarding complicit officials and scam compound owners.” The U.S. also “fully supports efforts to ensure justice for victims and criminal accountability for online scam operators, those who enable or protect them, and those complicit in related human trafficking crimes,” it added. Cambodia will host an international conference on combating cyber scams in September, Hun Manet said in a post on his Telegram social media account.

Tropical Storm Bertha Makes Landfall On Louisiana With Threatening Winds

Tropical Storm Bertha has made landfall on the southern tip of Louisiana. The storm moving slowly along the Gulf Coast on Wednesday is packing strong winds that extend over 100 miles out from its center. Damaging wind and storm surge are the main threats for the Deep South states. The National Hurricane Center says a tropical storm warning includes New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Storm surge up to 3 feet is possible, as well as heavy rain. Bertha is on a forecast track toward Texas. The storm earlier trudged past the Florida Panhandle and the tips of Alabama and Mississippi, closing beaches and parks.

Republican candidates in Arizona dominated primary elections Tuesday night. President Donald Trump and the late Charlie Kirk both endorsed Congressman Andy Biggs and he won his primary for Governor. He will face the current Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs in November. In district 1 which covers northeastern Maricopa County and is the wealthiest district in Arizona, the President endorsed former NFL Kicker Jay Feely, and he won. To the much watched district 4: which includes the Phoenix suburbs of Tempe and Mesa, Democrat Socialist Kai Newkirk lost by 30 points to 4 time incumbent Greg Stanton. Newkirk believes in sanctuary cities and wanted to abolish ICE.
