Snow Causes Massive 100-Car Pileup In Michigan

More than 100 vehicles smashed into each other or slid off the interstate in Michigan on Monday as snow fueled by the Great Lakes blanketed the state. The massive pileup prompted the Michigan State Police to close both directions of Interstate 196 just southwest of Grand Rapids. The State Police said there were numerous injuries but no deaths had been reported. The crash is just the latest impact of the major winter storm moving across the country. The National Weather Service issued warnings about either extremely cold temperatures or the potential for winter storms across several states. A day earlier, snow fell as far south as the Florida Panhandle and made it harder for football players to hang onto the ball during playoff games in Massachusetts and Chicago.

State Of Emergency Declared After Gangsters Attack Guatemalan Police

Guatemala's president declared a state of siege on Sunday after security forces freed dozens of prison guards held hostage by inmates, ending a weekend of gang violence that left at least seven police officers dead and another 10 injured. Rioting inmates had taken 46 hostages at three men's prisons early on Saturday. The government blamed the riots on the Barrio 18 gang, which it said was pushing for greater privileges for its members in prison. Gang-led violence targeted police in several areas around Guatemala City after security forces regained control of the prison where Barrio 18's leader, Aldo Duppie, was held. The gang leader, known as El Lobo, was taken back into custody. President Bernardo Arevalo declared a 30-day state of siege that he said would allow the full force of the state, including the police and the army, to combat gang violence. Under Guatemalan law, a state of siege can temporarily limit or suspend civil liberties and expand security forces' powers in response to threats to public order. Images provided by the police showed officers on Sunday morning escorting Barrio 18's leader, who appeared to have a bloody shoulder, out of a prison that had been taken over by inmates. Shortly afterward, simultaneous attacks against police officers broke out in and around the capital, in what Arevalo said was gang retaliation for taking back the prisons. One gang member was also killed in the violence. "These murders were carried out with the intention of terrorizing the security forces and the population so that we give up in the fight against gangs and their regime of terror. But they will fail," Arevalo said. Arevalo, who also declared three days of national mourning, said the state of siege should not alter normal life for Guatemalans. Earlier on Sunday, National Civil Police director David Boteo had advised Guatemalans to stay at home, and the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala issued a security warning for U.S. citizens. Guatemala's education minister canceled school classes across the country on Monday, which Arevalo said was a preventive measure. Guatemala's Congress declared Barrio 18 a terrorist group in October 2025, shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump's administration classified the gang as a foreign terrorist organization. El Lobo is currently serving prison sentences totaling some 2,000 years. He is married to the niece of Sandra Torres, Guatemala's former first lady who has been the runner-up in three presidential elections, most recently finishing second to Arevalo in 2023.

Firefighters In Chile Battling Deadly Forest Fires

Firefighters in Chile are battling forest fires that started on Sunday, killing at least 19 people and leaving around 1,500 homeless. Five large wildfires remain active Monday in the center and south of the country. Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a state of catastrophe in the central Biobio and Ñuble regions on Sunday. This allows greater coordination with the military to control the fires. Wildfires are common in Chile during the summer due to high temperatures and dry weather. This outbreak is one of the deadliest in recent years.

Spanish Train Collision Death Toll Rises To 40

Regional officials have confirmed at least 40 people are dead after a high-speed rail collision in southern Spain. The crash happened Sunday when the tail end of a train jumped the track, causing another train to derail. Authorities say the impact was so violent that bodies were found hundreds of meters away. Efforts to recover bodies continue, and the death toll may rise. The crash happened near Adamuz, with 159 people injured, including 12 critically. Transport Minister Óscar Puente calls the incident "strange" and says the cause is unknown. An investigation is underway.

A livestreamed video posted by Black Lives Matter Minnesota shows demonstrators chanting “ICE out” inside Cities Church during a service. Protesters claim the pastor leads the ICE field office overseeing immigration operations in the region and accuse the agency of using violent and illegal enforcement tactics. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department will review the incident and prosecute any violations of federal law. DOJ officials described the disruption as a potential interference with religious worship. The protest comes amid heightened tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota. ICE has not publicly commented on the allegations regarding the pastor’s role. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Trump administration is moving forward with plans for a new international “Board of Peace” to guide next steps in Gaza, U.S. officials confirmed. Countries can secure permanent membership on the board with a $1 billion contribution, while three-year appointments require no payment. India, Jordan, Australia, Greece, Cyprus, and Pakistan have said they received invitations, with Hungary and Vietnam confirming acceptance. Officials say the board could serve as a major alternative to the U.N. Security Council, where U.S. vetoes have previously blocked action on the ongoing conflict. The official member list is expected to be released in the coming days.

Pentagon places 1,500 soldiers on alert amid Minnesota protests

The Pentagon has ordered roughly 1,500 active-duty soldiers to prepare for a possible deployment to Minnesota, two U.S. officials told Reuters. The move comes after President Donald Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to protests against federal immigration operations. The troops, who specialize in cold-weather operations, are assigned to Army infantry battalions under the 11th Airborne Division based in Alaska. Officials say the units are on “prepare-to-deploy” orders in case violence escalates, but it is not yet clear if any will be sent. Trump had warned Minnesota officials to curb protesters targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, saying he would “institute the INSURRECTION ACT” if the unrest continued. The federal law allows the president to deploy military forces or federalize National Guard troops to address domestic disturbances. Since early last week, nearly 3,000 federal agents from ICE and Border Patrol have been sent to Minneapolis and St. Paul, where confrontations have intensified following the death of U.S. citizen Renee Good, who was shot by an ICE agent on January 7.
