President Donald Trump has agreed to cut tariffs on U.K. autos, steel and aluminum in a planned trade deal with Britain, which would buy more American beef and streamline its customs process for goods from the United States.. Thursday's announcement provides a political victory for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a degree of validation for Trump’s claims his turbulent approach on trade may be able to rebalance the global economy on his preferred terms. Yet the terms of the deal have yet to be completed so it can be signed. The Republican president says the final details “are being written up.” Trump says the agreement would lead to more beef and ethanol exports to the U.K.

Chicago-Born Robert Prevost Elected First American Pope In History

Cardinal Robert Prevost, an American missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops, was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. Prevost, 69, took the name Leo XIV. White smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney Thursday at 6:07 p.m. local time, signaling that a pontiff had been elected to lead the Catholic Church. In his first words, Pope Leo XIV, the American Robert Prevost, says “Peace be with you." The voting cardinals now fill the four balconies that flank the flag-draped balcony where Pope Leo XIV will speak. Many — including several who had been identified as possible contenders — seem joyful as they look over the crowd below. New Pope Set to Emerge from Vatican Balcony After White Smoke Signal

White smoke is pouring out of the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that a pope has been elected to lead the Catholic Church. That means the winner secured at least 89 votes of the 133 cardinals participating in the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis. The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers. The name will be announced later, when a top cardinal utters the words “Habemus papam!” Latin for “We have a pope!” from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica. The cardinal then reads the winner’s birth name in Latin, and reveals the name he has chosen to be called. The new pope is then expected to make his first public appearance and impart a blessing.

A deadly midair collision in January between a military helicopter and a commercial airliner, and several crashes since, have prompted officials to focus on fixing the nation’s outdated air traffic control system and hiring more controllers. They say doing so would help ensure safety and prevent the kind of problems that have plagued the Newark, New Jersey, airport since its radar system failed briefly last week. The Federal Aviation Administration is also working on a more immediate fix for the technology and staffing problems in Newark while a broader overhaul is in the works. A broader multibillion-dollar plan will be announced Thursday for long-overdue upgrades to the nation's air traffic control system.
