Protecting yourself is very important, especially for women. It is very unsafe for women living in the twenty-first century. If you are a woman, you are probably aware of the dangers in the world and the anxiety that can fill your mind. As a woman, I can attest to how scary the world can be. While many want to live in a world of rainbows and butterflies, it is unrealistic.

We live in a fallen world that is drenched in sin. There is no running from this truth, as we live in a world where there are murders, abuse, and unethical behavior. As women, we have to know how to protect ourselves. By learning how to defend ourselves, we will have a better chance of being able to live without fear. Here are five ways to protect yourself.

1. Carry Pepper Spray

One way to protect yourself is to carry pepper spray at all times. Pepper spray can be purchased online or at a department store. It is relatively inexpensive and can help you in many ways. Having pepper spray with you will help you feel more protected and give you a tool in case you need it. Knowing how to use pepper spray is vital because if you misuse it, you could hurt yourself.

Make sure you read all the directions and pamphlets on the package to learn how to operate the pepper spray. If you use the pepper spray in accordance with the directions, you should be able to successfully learn to use it in case you have to use it on a predator or an intruder. It is our hope and prayer that you will never have to use pepper spray on anyone, but it is good to have it with you at all times and to know how to use it.

I have been carrying pepper spray with me for a long time, and it helps give me a sense of protection that I would not have otherwise. Sometimes, just having the pepper spray visible can also make you feel as though other people will not try to harass or bother you. Many companies sell pepper spray on keychains, which is the type I have, and it is easily accessible. Consider getting pepper spray for yourself, as it can help protect you for years.

2. Invest in Home Security

2. Invest in Home Security

A second way to protect yourself is to invest in home security. Home security is expensive, but it is needed. Whether you are married, living with friends, or living alone, it is essential to invest in home security. Having locks is good; however, it is even better to have a home security system with cameras and devices that notify the police if anyone tries to break in. Yet again, the hope and prayer is that this will never happen, but it is crucial to be prepared in case it happens.

Sometimes, being prepared can help prevent anything from happening. In fact, if you have someone come out to install your home security, they will place a sign in your yard that says you have home security. This will also serve as a deterrent to criminals. Never underestimate how these little things can really help you and protect you. It could save your life one day.

3. Always Lock Your Doors

3. Always Lock Your Doors

A third way to protect yourself is always to lock your doors. This applies to your home, apartment, and vehicle. All of these items must be locked to keep you and your possessions safe. Many people are careless when it comes to locking their doors, but this is something everyone needs to be more intentional about. If you are bad about forgetting to lock your doors, write yourself a note and post it by the doorway or on the inside of your car. These are great ways to help you remember to lock your doors.

You need to lock it whenever you make it inside a house, apartment, or car. Don’t delay in locking your doors. It is better to go ahead and lock them just to be safe, especially if you are alone. If you are with someone, have them lock the door behind you as you bring in groceries or your purchases. However, if you are alone, lock the door as soon as possible from the moment you enter.

The same goes for if you are entering your car. As soon as you sit down in your car, lock the doors. I always do this as it has almost become a nervous habit. I try to tell myself it is always better to be on the safe side rather than to be careless. While many might think this is excessive, others will agree it is needed. As someone who lives in a city with a lot of crime, it is never too soon to lock your doors and head on your way.

4. Tell Someone if You Are Going Out at Night

4. Tell Someone if You Are Going Out at Night

A fourth way to protect yourself is to tell someone if you’re going out at night. If you are going out by yourself at night, notify someone of where you will be, where you are going, and what time you will be back. If it is at all possible, try to have someone else go with you. Preferably, this should be a male, such as a brother, a friend, or a partner. However, if it is impossible to have someone go with you, just be aware of your surroundings, go to where you are going, and notify someone of where you are.

Going out at night is sadly not very safe nowadays, especially for women. Nighttime can attract criminals, so it is best to avoid going out at night by yourself. Try to stay in well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you ever feel unsafe, visit the nearest business and wait until a friend can pick you up.

5. Use the Buddy System

5. Use the Buddy System

A fifth way to protect yourself is to use the buddy system. The buddy system is when you always travel in packs of at least two people. It would be best to be a larger group; however, as long as you have someone else with you, things are much safer. It makes things even safer if the person with you is a male. If you are a single female, try to ask a guy friend or your brother to go with you to events. This will ensure your safety as well as give you peace of mind.

Let them know that you feel unsafe and that you need extra protection. If they are truly your friend, then they will understand. The same is true for your brother, who should be more than happy to help. If you cannot have a guy to accompany you, ask a few girls to assist you. They should be glad to help and give you the added safety you need. They could also be searching for a buddy system to provide them with safety, protection, and peace of mind.
