D.C. NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT EXTENDED THROUGH FEBRUARY

The Washington D.C. National Guard will remain stationed in the nation’s capital at least through February 28, according to formal orders reviewed by The Associated Press. The extension comes under President Donald Trump’s August emergency order, which directed the “Secretary of War” to protect federal property and support local law enforcement in the city. Hundreds of Guard members continue to patrol public spaces across Washington, D.C., while also assisting with cleanup and other community maintenance duties. The deployment extension underscores ongoing security and operational support in the nation’s capital, keeping Guard members on duty for several additional months.

Trump warns Supreme Court on tariffs, still has other options to tax imports

President Donald Trump is warning the Supreme Court could leave the United States “defenseless” if it strikes down the sweeping tariffs he imposed this year, but legal experts say he still has multiple ways to keep taxing imports aggressively. Trump claims his emergency powers give him near-limitless authority to set tariffs, but justices appeared skeptical during Wednesday’s hearing. Even if the court rules against him, Trump could use other laws, including Section 301 of the Trade Act to counter unfair trade practices, Section 232 for national security tariffs, and even the nearly century-old Smoot-Hawley law. Tariffs have become a cornerstone of Trump’s second-term economic policy, with rates on imports rising sharply, and the president has framed the measures as essential to protecting American businesses.

FAA: Air Traffic Reduced By 10% Across 40 Markets Starting Friday

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it will reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. The agency is confronting staffing shortages caused by air traffic controllers, who are working unpaid, with some calling out of work during the shutdown, resulting in delays across the country. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford says the agency is not going to wait for a problem to act, saying the shutdown is causing staffing pressures and “we can’t ignore it.” Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy say they will meet later Wednesday with airline leaders to figure out how to safely implement the reduction.

Democrats Dominate Off-Year Elections

In New Jersey, Democratic U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill, a moderate with military experience first elected to Congress in the 2018 midterm election during President Donald Trump's first term, bested Republican businessman and former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli, in a race that focused on affordability issues. In Virginia, Democratic former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger was elected as the state's first female governor. Spanberger called for pragmatism, pledged to defend her state's sizeable population of federal workers from targeting by the Trump administration, and listed housing and healthcare affordability as her day-one priorities. Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears, the state's lieutenant governor, played to her conservative base in the election by questioning Spanberger's record.

DOJ Prosecutors Ordered To Produce Comey Trial Materials

Justice Department prosecutors have been told to produce materials in their criminal case against former FBI director James Comey. A federal judge has given Trump administration prosecutors until the end of Thursday to produce grand jury materials and other evidence seized from an investigation into Comey. His attorney’s said they were at a disadvantage because they’d not been able to review materials gathered years ago. The judge scolded the Justice Department for adopting an “indict first” and investigate second approach. Comey has pleaded not guilty to charges of lying to Congress.
