Gabbard Slashes Intelligence Office Workforce & Cuts Budget

The Office of National Intelligence says it will dramatically reduce its workforce and cut its budget by more than $700 million annually. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard says the office "has become bloated and inefficient, and the intelligence community is rife with abuse of power, unauthorized leaks of classified intelligence, and politicized weaponization of intelligence.” She says the intelligence community “must make serious changes to fulfill its responsibility to the American people and the U.S. Constitution by focusing on our core mission: find the truth and provide objective, unbiased, timely intelligence to the President and policymakers.”

Nebraska Announces Immigration Detention Center

Nebraska has announced plans for an immigration detention center in the state’s remote southwest corner as President Donald Trump’s administration races to expand the infrastructure necessary for increasing deportations. The Trump administration is adding new detention facilities across the country to hold the growing number of immigrants it has arrested and accused of being in the country illegally. The facilities include the remote detention center in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz." The Nebraska facility has already been dubbed the “Cornhusker Clink.” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement centers held more than 56,000 immigrants in June, the most since 2019.

Texas’ GOP-Controlled House Approves New Congressional Maps

Texas' Republican-led legislature is expected to approve new congressional maps that add five new House seats that the GOP could win. The state House planned to vote Wednesday on a plan drafted at President Donald Trump's urging. Trump wants to stave off Republicans losing control of the U.S. House in next year's midterms. Texas Democratic state lawmakers delayed the vote by leaving the state, but enough returned this week for the body to reconvene. The GOP House speaker assigned round-the-clock police monitors to Democrats to keep them from leaving again. One state representative spent Monday night and Tuesday in the Texas House rather than agree to a monitor and was joined by other Democrats in protest.
