Knicks Watch Party Ends With Arrests, Injuries

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police report that an NBA finals viewing party in Manhattan turned chaotic Monday. Dejected Knicks fans scaled light poles, pelted officers with objects, and ripped signs out of the street following the team’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game led police to close off a large area outside Madison Square Garden. Instead, about 7,000 people gathered at Bryant Park. While the party was mostly calm, some fans blocked traffic and refused to disperse. Police arrested eight people, and five officers suffered injuries. Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized that most fans watched peacefully.

U.S. Military Launches Strikes Against Iran In Response To Downing Of American Helicopter

The U.S. military says it has begun strikes against Iran following the crash of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter off the coast of Oman. In a statement posted to social media Tuesday, U.S. Central Command said the strikes would be “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.” It comes after President Donald Trump blamed Iran for downing the helicopter and vowed that the U.S. would respond. Meanwhile, a bill to provide nearly $70 billion for immigration enforcement narrowly passed the House and now goes to Trump for his signature, fueling the administration’s deportation agenda for the remainder of his time in the White House.

Texas Teen Convicted Of Murder In Fatal Track Meet Stabbing At High School

MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) — A Texas teenager who prosecutors said provoked a 17-year-old athlete from a rival team before fatally stabbing him at a high school track meet has been found guilty of murder. Jurors on Tuesday convicted Karmelo Anthony in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf. The killing last year stunned a booming Dallas suburb where the boys attended different schools. It quickly drew wider attention, in part because of social media posts about race. The now-19-year-old Anthony is Black. Metcalf was white. Prosecutors and defense attorneys told jurors the case had nothing to do with race. Prosecutors accused Anthony of egging on a confrontation after being asked to leave the tent of another track team. Anthony’s attorneys argued the teen was defending himself.

The results aren’t in question. Neither Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins nor Democratic challenger Graham Platner faces serious opposition for their party’s nomination. Elsewhere, President Donald Trump’s clout within his party will be tested anew in states like South Carolina and Nevada, where he’s endorsed his favored candidates. Democrats hope to build momentum in Nevada in their broader push to reclaim key governor’s seats.

Air Canada Pilot Charged After Allegedly Flying Without A Proper License

TORONTO (AP) — A former Air Canada pilot has been charged after flying for years without a proper license, Canadian police said Tuesday. Geoffrey Wall, of Barrie, Ontario, is alleged to have operated as an airline captain between 2009 and 2025 without a license to fly large commercial passenger planes, according to Peel Regional Police. He is said to have flown more than 900 flights domestically and internationally without the required license. Air Canada said Wall, 59, held a valid commercial pilot license, but was promoted to captain without the required airline transport pilot license. “This pilot had a 27-year career and we are alleging that since 2009 has been flying for years misrepresenting himself and his credentials to his employer and regulatory officials using fraudulent licensing documents,” deputy police chief Nick Milinovich said. “He rose to the position of pilot in command where for almost 17 year he flew Boeing 767s, 777s and 787s.” The airline said he was removed from active duty once it was discovered that he did not have the correct license and that it was voluntarily reported to Transport Canada, the regulator. The pilot is no longer employed by the airline. Police said anomalies were detected in a documentation check. Transport Canada contacted police earlier this year. Air Canada claimed safety was not compromised and an audit of its pilots found no other instances of non-compliance. “Safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency, including a flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot every 12 months,” the airline said in a statement. “However, appropriate licensing is an essential layer of the airline industry’s multi-layered approach to safety, so Air Canada takes this matter with utmost seriousness.” The airline declined to comment further due to privacy law and an active criminal investigation. The airline, which did not name the pilot, said he has been fined by Transport Canada for not having the correct license to be an aircraft captain. Police also say the accused filed a false report to police about allegedly stolen pilot documentation.

DHS Allows Iranian World Cup Players To Enter U.S. The Day Before Matches

June 9 (Reuters) - Iran's national soccer team, currently training in Tijuana, Mexico, will be able to enter the U.S. the day before each of their three World Cup matches, the Department of Homeland Security said on Tuesday. Media reports over the weekend had quoted the Iranian ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, as saying that Iran's team would have to enter and leave the U.S. the same day as they were playing, raising questions over logistics and whether it would affect team performance. It was not the case that Iran would be forced to arrive the same day as their matches, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said. "These statements are untrue," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Thanks to the generosity of President (Donald) Trump the Iranian team will be able to arrive the day before their matches." The ambassador, speaking to Reuters in Tijuana via an interpreter on Monday, criticized U.S. officials for denying visas to some of the Iranian football federation staff but said that the ones that had been granted did not prevent them from staying overnight. "Their visas don't specify anything about them having to leave at a certain time," he said. After weeks of uncertainty, the U.S. awarded visas to all the players on Friday, just 10 days before their first ?match. But several members of the ?Iranian squad were not given visas, including "key managerial and administrative members," according to Iran's football federation. They include the team manager, two team analysts, the media director and a representative of the Foreign Ministry, according to Iran's embassy in Mexico. Iran is due to face New ?Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21 ?and Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The players were originally slated to train in Arizona, but that was changed after the U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran in February. Trump said in March that Iran was welcome to participate in the World Cup but that he did not believe it was appropriate for Iran's team to stay in the U.S. "for their own life and safety."

Trump: U.S. Must Respond After Iran Downs American Army Helicopter Near Hormuz

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump says Iran was responsible for downing an American military helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz and that the U.S. “must” respond to the attack. Trump made the comment Tuesday in a social media post after a drone boat rescued the crew of the Apache attack helicopter that crashed near the strategic waterway, which Iran has effectively closed during its war with the U.S. and Israel. It was the first known drone rescue at sea by the U.S. military. Capt. Tim Hawkins is a spokesman for U.S. Central Command. He said the unmanned boat located the two aviators and brought them to shore.

Trump Approval Near Record Low As Americans Expect Higher Gas Prices

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's approval rate held near the lowest levels of his political career in recent days as most Americans said they expected gasoline prices to keep rising amid the Iran war, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Monday. Some 35% of respondents said they approved of Trump's performance in the White House, unchanged from a prior Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in mid-May. The reading was just above the lowest rating of his current term in office - 34% in an April Reuters/Ipsos poll - and also close to his first-term low of 33% in December 2017. The Republican leader has faced widespread discontent in recent months over his decision to go to war with Iran, which has led to a surge in gasoline prices. While prices at the pump have edged lower in recent weeks amid bets the Iran conflict would end, some 59% of respondents said they expected U.S. gas prices to get worse in the next year, compared with 17% who thought they would get better, according to the six-day poll. The rest of the respondents said they weren't sure or that prices would stay the same. Trump ordered military strikes on Iran on February 28 alongside U.S. ally Israel. Iran responded with counterattacks that have largely shut down shipping through a narrow strait that previously carried a fifth of global oil trade. The pace of attacks and counterattacks has diminished since April but peace talks have yet to yield a lasting agreement. LOW APPROVAL ON COST OF LIVING Only 22% of Americans approve of how Trump is managing the cost of living for U.S. households, compared to 70% who disapprove. Americans are now more dissatisfied with Trump's performance on the issue than they were of his Democratic predecessor in office, Joe Biden, who closed out his term with 29% approval on the cost of living and 63% disapproval. Biden struggled with several years of high inflation which ultimately weighed on his party in the 2024 presidential election and helped lift Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris. Trump campaigned on promises to fix inflation, and persistently high fuel prices are weighing on his party's hopes of keeping control of Congress in November's midterm elections. Some 36% of Americans said they approved of U.S. strikes on Iran. A smaller share - 25% - said the benefits of the strikes had been worth the costs. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was carried out nationwide, showed registered voters said they would pick Democrats over Republicans by 41% to 37% if congressional elections were held today. While polls last year showed voters trusted Republicans more on how to manage the economy, their advantage has recently evaporated, with 36% of voters in the latest poll saying Democrats had a better plan for the economy, compared to 37% who picked Republicans. The poll, which was conducted online, gathered responses from 4,531 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
