Federal Judge Blocks Death Penalty in Mangione Case

A federal judge has ruled that prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty against Luigi Mangione in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett dismissed a federal murder charge against Mangione, finding it was legally flawed. The decision blocks the Trump administration’s effort to pursue capital punishment in the high-profile case. Garnett left in place federal stalking charges, which carry a maximum possible sentence of life in prison. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both federal and state charges related to Thompson’s death. Thompson was shot and killed in December 2024 as he walked to an investor conference in midtown Manhattan. Prosecutors had described the killing as a premeditated assassination. While the death penalty is no longer an option at the federal level, Mangione still faces life-in-prison sentences if convicted. State murder charges remain pending, and future court dates are scheduled in both cases.

New Epstein files released by DOJ

The Justice Department has released a new batch of documents from its investigation into financier Jeffrey Epstein and his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. The records were made public Friday under a law aimed at increasing transparency around what the government knew about Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls and his interactions with wealthy and powerful individuals. The newly released files are part of a much larger collection of records. Federal officials say millions of pages are still being reviewed, with hundreds of Justice Department attorneys working to redact information that could identify victims or compromise privacy protections. Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges but died by suicide later that year while being held at a New York jail. His death has fueled ongoing public scrutiny and conspiracy theories, as well as continued demands for the release of government records related to his case. The Justice Department says additional documents may be released as the review process continues.
