Death Toll From Flooding In Texas Surpasses 100 As Search Continues

Flash floods in Texas have killed more than 100 people, many of them children. Heavy rains fell quickly in the predawn hours Friday in the Texas Hill Country. That caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes. The number of deaths reached at least 104 on Monday as a massive search continued for missing people. Among the missing are 10 girls and a counselor from a Christian summer camp. The July Fourth holiday weekend likely brought an influx of visitors to the area outside San Antonio, making it difficult to track everyone who may have been in the area.

Troops And Federal Agents Descend On Los Angeles Park

Dozens of federal officers in tactical gear roamed a mostly empty park in a Los Angeles neighborhood with a large immigrant population for about an hour before clearing out. It wasn’t immediately known if any arrests were made Monday. Defense officials had said about 90 members of the California National Guard and over a dozen military vehicles would help protect immigration officers as they carried out a raid in MacArthur Park. Mayor Karen Bass was among the small crowd who watched as officers moved through a section of the park and then cleared out. Some activists who had earlier warned people to leave the area filmed the officers.

Flooding From Chantal's Remnants Forces Dozens To Flee Homes In NC

Officials in North Carolina say a woman was killed when floodwaters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal swept her car from a rural road and dozens of people were forced to flee their homes by floodwaters. The Chapel Hill Fire Department and neighboring agencies completed more than 50 water rescues, many of them in areas where floodwaters entered or threatened to enter apartments. In Orange County, the possibility of the failure of the Lake Michael Dam prompted officials to issue a voluntary evacuation for areas downstream. Chatham County authorities say they're searching for two canoers. North Carolina Emergency Management says parts of central North Carolina experienced hazardous conditions overnight including 3 to 8 inches of rain and possible tornadoes.

U.S Signals Trade Announcements Imminent As Deadline Looms

The United States will make several trade announcements in the next 48 hours, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday, ahead of a U.S. deadline on Wednesday to finalize trade pacts. “We’ve had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations. So my mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals,” Bessent said in an interview with CNBC. “So it’s going to be a busy couple of days.” President Donald Trump said the United States would start delivering tariff letters from 12:00 pm ET (1600 GMT) on Monday. The letters would not necessarily provide an ultimatum, according to Bessent. “It’s just ‘thank you for wanting to trade with the United States of America. We welcome you as a trading partner, and here’s the rate, unless you want to come back and try to negotiate,'” he said. Bessent declined to comment on whether negotiations on new ownership of the TikTok short video app, which President Donald Trump said would start this week, would be linked to trade talks. He said he would meet with his Chinese counterpart in the next couple of weeks. “I think there are things for us to do together if the Chinese want to do it, so we will discuss whether we are able to move beyond trade into other areas,” he told CNBC.

27-Year-Old Man Has Been Killed After Opening Fire At U.S. Border Patrol Facility In McAllen, Texas

Authorities say a 27-year-old man was killed after opening fire at a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the suspect as Ryan Louis Mosqueda and told reporters Monday morning that federal agents returned fire at Mosqueda, who had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest. Rodriguez said the man’s motive was currently unknown. One officer was injured in the shooting after being hit in the knee, but Rodriguez said it was unclear if the injury was from shrapnel or a bullet. The shooting took place at a facility across the street from McAllen International Airport.

Crews trudged through debris and waded into swollen rivers in the search for victims of catastrophic flooding that has killed close to 90 people in Texas, including more than two dozen campers and counselors from an all-girls Christian camp. With additional rain on the way, the risk of more flooding was still high Monday in saturated parts of central Texas. Authorities said the death toll was sure to rise as crews looked for the many people who were still missing. Operators of Camp Mystic, a century-old summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, said they lost 27 campers and counselors.
