US job openings lowest since September

Job openings in the United States fell in March as President Donald Trump’s trade wars clouded the economic outlook. U.S. employers posted 7.2 million vacancies in March, down from 7.5 million in February and 8.1 million in March 2024. It was the fewest number of openings since September and below the 7.5 million that economists had forecast. Still, openings remain high by historical standards but have fallen steadily since peaking at 12.1 million in March 2022 when the economy was still bouncing back from COVID-19 lockdowns. China's export orders dip Monthly surveys of Chinese factory managers shows export orders slowed in April as higher tariffs on U.S. imports began to kick in. China and the U.S. appear to remain at stark odds after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered combined tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods. China has imposed duties of up to 125% on U.S. products, with some exemptions. Data released Wednesday showed the official manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to a 16-month low of 49.0 from 50.5 in March. GM recalls nearly 600,000 vehicles General Motors is recalling nearly 600,000 vehicles across its Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands in the U.S. due to potential manufacturing defects that can cause engine failure. The recall covers model years 2021 and 2024. The problem centers around a connecting rod or crankshaft component. This can lead to engine damage, and potentially failure. Dealers will inspect and repair, free of charge. The company estimates that just 3% of affected vehicles have the defect. Trump offers automakers relief on 25% tariffs President Donald Trump has signed executive orders to relax some of his 25% tariffs on automobiles and auto parts. Tuesday's action is a significant reversal as the import taxes threatened to hurt domestic manufacturers. Automakers and independent analyses have indicated that the tariffs could raise prices, reduce sales and make U.S. production less competitive worldwide. Trump portrayed the changes as a bridge toward automakers moving more productions into the United States. The administration provides automakers that finish their vehicles domestically a 15% rebate this year, offsetting the cost of the tariffs. That rebate would be 10% the second year, giving automakers some time to relocate production of parts to the U.S.

President Donald Trump has celebrated the 100th day of his second term — spending much of the day in campaign mode. He repeatedly mocked his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, at Tuesday's rally — attacking Biden's mental acuity and even how Biden looks in a bathing suit. Trump also attacked polling and news coverage not favorable to him. The rally just outside Detroit, which marked Trump’s largest political event since returning to the White House, glossed over two forces that had rocked the state: his steep trade tariffs and combative attitude toward Canada. Egg prices have dropped about 64 percent… gasoline is down from a national average high under Biden of $5.01 per gallon to around 3 dollars 14 cents now. The election results emerged Tuesday, a day after the party scored a stunning comeback victory in a vote widely seen as a rebuke of U.S. President Donald Trump. The vote-counting agency Elections Canada finished processing nearly all ballots. The Liberals could be left just three seats shy of a majority. That means they will have to seek help from another, smaller party to pass legislation. Milwaukee judge Suspended for helping illegal immigrant evade authorities The Wisconsin Supreme Court has suspended a judge accused of helping a man evade immigration authorities. The FBI took Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan into custody on Friday morning at the county courthouse. She faces federal charges of concealing an individual to prevent his discovery and arrest and obstructing or impeding a proceeding. The state Supreme Court issued a two-page order Tuesday noting that Dugan faces two federal charges and saying it is in the public interest to temporarily relieve her of her duties. Her attorney had no immediate comment. Democrats have accused the Trump administration of trying to chill the nation’s judiciary.

US consumer confidence plummets

Americans’ confidence in the economy slumped for the fifth straight month to the lowest level since the onset of COIVD-19 as worries about the impact of tariffs take a heavy toll on consumer expectations for future growth. The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index fell 7.9 points in April to 86, its lowest reading since May 2020. The figures reflect a rapidly souring mood among consumers, most of whom expect prices to rise because of the widespread tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Illinois town mourns 4 killed at after-school camp Residents of a small central Illinois city are mourning the loss of three children and a teenager who were killed in a startling vehicle collision in a building that hosts a popular after-school camp. Authorities say it appears the crash Monday, in which a car barreled through the building in Chatham, was not a targeted attack. Illinois State Police say the 44-year-old driver is not in custody. She was not injured but was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and toxicology reports are pending. Chatham is about 12 miles from the state capital, Springfield.
