The van went through the barricade at Connecticut Avenue and H Street Northwest just before 6:30 a.m., according to local news outlets. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Vaccine panel drops push against COVID mRNA shots

A key federal vaccine advisory panel is stepping back from efforts to stop recommending COVID mRNA vaccines. Some advisers under Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had considered dropping recommendations for the shots, but that plan is no longer moving forward. Advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are scheduled to meet next week to make updated recommendations on which vaccines Americans should receive and when.

Russia calling for Iran War ceasefire

Russia is pushing a new resolution at the United Nations calling for an immediate halt to military action in the Iran conflict. The draft resolution condemns attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure and calls for their protection. It also urges a quick return to negotiations and diplomacy but does not specifically name Iran, the United States, or Israel. The measure could be put to a vote as early as today.

Shutdown Impacts TSA Staffing, Airport Lines

Some of the nation’s busiest airports experienced hours-long security lines over the weekend as the partial federal government shutdown began affecting air travel. Most Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners are federal employees who must continue working without pay during the shutdown, creating staffing shortages at many checkpoints. San Francisco International Airport uses a private screening contractor under TSA oversight, a system that has helped keep lines moving despite the shutdown. Experts say the private model could be a way to protect airport security operations during funding gaps, but the TSA union warns privatization could reduce pay and worker protections and introduce security risks.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader reportedly wounded

Israeli intelligence believes Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, may have been lightly wounded during a joint U.S.-Israeli air campaign targeting Iran. A senior Israeli official told Reuters the reported injury could explain why Khamenei has not appeared publicly since assuming power. According to several Iranian sources, the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pushed for Khamenei’s selection, viewing him as a leader likely to support hardline domestic and foreign policies similar to those of his father. The situation remains tense as Israeli officials continue to warn of further action. Israel Katz said any leader installed by Iran’s current leadership could be considered a potential target for elimination.

Iran Attacks Shipping, Drones Strike Near Dubai Airport

Tensions in the Middle East escalated Wednesday as Iran launched drone and missile attacks across the Persian Gulf while U.S. and Israeli airstrikes continue against the country. Two Iranian drones struck near Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs and home to the long-haul carrier Emirates. Four people were wounded in the attack, though airport officials said flights continued operating. Iran also targeted commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies. A projectile struck a container ship in the waterway, setting it on fire and forcing most of the crew to abandon the vessel. In a further escalation, Iran’s military warned it could begin targeting banks and financial institutions across the region, raising concerns in financial hubs such as Dubai, as well as in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The developments have heightened fears of wider disruption in the energy-rich region and increased concerns about global oil supplies if attacks continue.

Trump Says U.S. Destroyed Mine-Laying Vessels After Warning Iran Over Strait Of Hormuz

The U.S. military has hit and "completely destroyed" 10 inactive mine-laying vessels, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, warning that any mines laid in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran must be removed immediately. In apparent response to media reports that Iran had begun laying mines in the strait, Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday: "If Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY! He said that if Tehran did not do so it would face military consequences, without providing details. "If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before. If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction!" Trump wrote. He said the U.S. was using the same technology deployed against drug traffickers to "permanently eliminate any boat or ship attempting to mine the Hormuz Strait," later adding that the U.S. had hit and destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying vessels. In recent months, the U.S. has carried out a series of strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that it alleges were carrying drugs, killing dozens of people. The Pentagon said earlier on Tuesday that it was striking Iranian mine-laying vessels and ?mine storage facilities. The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has already effectively halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, along Iran's coast, where a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes. The top U.S. general said earlier on Tuesday that the U.S. military has started looking at ways to potentially escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, should it be ordered to do so. "We're looking at a range of options there," General Dan Caine told reporters at the Pentagon. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright posted on X that the U.S. Navy had already successfully escorted an oil tanker through the key water way, but later deleted the post. The United States has not yet escorted any oil tankers or vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters when asked about the issue at a press conference later on Tuesday. "A video clip was deleted from Secretary Wright's official X account after it was determined to be incorrectly captioned by Department of Energy staff," a department spokesperson said. Commenting on Wright's remarks, a spokesperson for Iran's Revolutionary Guards denied an oil ship had been escorted. "Any movement of the U.S. fleet and its allies will be stopped by our missiles and drones," Ali Mohammad Naini said in comments carried by Iranian state media.

White House: Rise In Energy Prices Over Iran Is Temporary

The American public will see oil and gas prices drop rapidly, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday, once the objectives of the joint Israeli-U.S. air war against Iran are fully achieved. "Rest assured, to the American people, the recent increase in oil and gas prices is temporary, and this operation will result in lower gas prices in the long term," Leavitt told reporters. Oil prices on Monday surged to more than $119 a barrel - their highest since June 2022 - as supply cuts by Saudi Arabia and other producers stoked fears of major disruptions to global supplies. Leavitt added that Trump and his energy team were closely watching the markets, speaking with industry leaders, and that the U.S. military was drawing up additional options in line with the president's directive to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. The deliberations reflect White House worries that the surge in oil prices - ?following more than a week of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran - will hurt U.S. businesses and consumers ahead of the November midterm elections, when Trump's fellow Republicans hope to retain control of Congress.

Baltimore Police Officer Wounded, Gunman Killed During Burglary Call

A police officer responding to a burglary call in Baltimore was shot in the leg Tuesday by a gunman who was killed by another officer, authorities said. A woman jumped out of a window during the tense confrontation and another woman was held at gunpoint by the man before he was shot, Police Commissioner Richard Worley said. “It was relatively quick because he was firing on our officers,” Worley said. The officer with a leg wound was in stable condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Thomas Scalea praised a “buddy” who applied a tourniquet at the scene. “We’re just so thankful that the officer or any other folks in that neighborhood were not severely harmed,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told reporters. “Our thoughts are with him and his family, and even the family of the deceased.” The man who died was related to people at the home, Worley said. No names were released. The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, a union that represents officers, said “all involved members are in good spirits.”

Canada Boosts Security After Shots Fired At Consulate

Canadian police boosted security around U.S. and Israeli diplomatic buildings on Tuesday after shots were fired at the U.S. consulate in Toronto, in what Prime Minister Mark Carney called a "reprehensible act." Police say they were called to the consulate around 5:30 a.m. (0930 GMT), where they found spent shell casings and damage to the building. No one was injured. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Chris Leather said security would be tightened at the U.S. and Israeli consulates in Toronto, Canada's most populous city, and at those countries' embassies in the capital Ottawa. "These consulates deserve a heightened amount of vigilance and security at this time in the hopes that we can bring the temperature down," he told a press conference, saying the shooting would be probed as a national security incident. Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said witness evidence indicates that two men exited a white SUV outside the consulate around 4:30 a.m., fired shots from a handgun at the front of the building and drove away. "(This was) a reprehensible act of violence and attempt at intimidation," Carney said in a post on X, saying police would do all they could "to ensure the perpetrators of these violent acts are identified and brought to the full weight of justice." The consulate shooting follows three separate incidents last week in which gunshots were fired at synagogues in the Toronto area. No one was injured in those shootings. Barredo said it was too early to draw a connection between the consulate shooting and those at the synagogues. The U.S. State Department said in a statement that it was aware of the incident and was closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local law enforcement. Separately, on Sunday, an improvised device exploded in Norway at the U.S. embassy in Oslo and police were still searching for a suspect. A possible link to the Iran war was among the lines of inquiry.

The Pentagon says about 140 U.S. troops have been wounded in the Iran war, including 8 severely and 108 who returned to duty. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Tuesday would be the most intense day yet of U.S. strikes inside Iran. The Islamic Republic, its firepower diminished, has vowed to fight on. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the aim of the war is the popular overthrow of Iran's government. U.S. President Donald Trump sent contradictory signals about how long the war could last, fueling uncertainty and wild swings in financial markets Monday. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf dismissed any suggestion that Tehran has sought a ceasefire. The U.S. joint chiefs chairman says Iran's missile attacks have fallen 90% and one-way attack drones have decreased 83% since the war began.
