U.S. Central Command said Kuwait's air defenses mistakenly shot down three American F-15 fighter jets during active combat missions against Iran on Monday. :: February 28, 2026 The U.S. and Israel launched a joint assault on Iran over the weekend, with missiles and airstrike targeting Tehran's leaders, commanders and military installations. Iran launched retaliatory strikes on neighboring Gulf states in response. The U.S. described Monday's incident as an apparent friendly-fire episode. CENTCOM said all six crew members from the three jets ejected from the aircraft safely, were recovered and are in stable condition. It said that Kuwait had acknowledged the incident and that an investigation was underway. Kuwait had intercepted hostile drones earlier on same day. In a separate incident, smoke was seen rising from the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy compound in Kuwait City. Witnesses told Reuters fire trucks and ambulances were in the area. There were no responses to requests for comment on the embassy incident from the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, or from the U.S. State Department.

Victims were rushed to area hospitals, with several in critical condition. The FBI has joined the investigation, noting indicators that the shooting could be connected to terrorism, though officials say it’s too early to make a definitive determination. Buford’s, a popular nightlife spot on West Sixth Street near the University of Texas, was crowded with patrons at the time of the attack. Local leaders praised the rapid response from first responders. Officials continue to investigate and have asked anyone with information to contact Austin Police.

As of 9:30 a.m. ET on March 1, three U.S. service members have been killed in action during Operation Epic Fury, the ongoing U.S. military campaign in the Middle East. Five others are seriously wounded, and several additional personnel sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions. Those with minor injuries are being returned to duty. Major combat operations are continuing, and U.S. officials say the situation remains fluid. Out of respect for the families, further details — including the identities of the fallen — will be withheld until at least 24 hours after next of kin have been notified. President Donald Trump warned on Truth Social that Iran has threatened retaliation.
